Chesapeake Utilities' (NYSE:CPK) Shareholders Will Receive A Bigger Dividend Than Last Year

The board of Chesapeake Utilities Corporation (NYSE:CPK) has announced that it will be paying its dividend of $0.685 on the 7th of July, an increased payment from last year's comparable dividend. Although the dividend is now higher, the yield is only 2.2%, which is below the industry average.

Chesapeake Utilities' Projected Earnings Seem Likely To Cover Future Distributions

It would be nice for the yield to be higher, but we should also check if higher levels of dividend payment would be sustainable. Based on the last payment, Chesapeake Utilities' earnings were much higher than the dividend, but it wasn't converting those earnings into cash flow. Since a dividend means the company is paying out cash to investors, this could prove to be a problem in the future.

The next year is set to see EPS grow by 36.0%. If the dividend continues along recent trends, we estimate the payout ratio will be 39%, which is in the range that makes us comfortable with the sustainability of the dividend.

Chesapeake Utilities Has A Solid Track Record

The company has a sustained record of paying dividends with very little fluctuation. The annual payment during the last 10 years was $1.08 in 2015, and the most recent fiscal year payment was $2.74. This works out to be a compound annual growth rate (CAGR) of approximately 9.8% a year over that time. The growth of the dividend has been pretty reliable, so we think this can offer investors some nice additional income in their portfolio.

We Could See Chesapeake Utilities' Dividend Growing

Investors who have held shares in the company for the past few years will be happy with the dividend income they have received. It's encouraging to see that Chesapeake Utilities has been growing its earnings per share at 7.2% a year over the past five years. The lack of cash flows does make us a bit cautious though, especially when it comes to the future of the dividend.

In Summary

Overall, we always like to see the dividend being raised, but we don't think Chesapeake Utilities will make a great income stock. While the low payout ratio is a redeeming feature, this is offset by the minimal cash to cover the payments. We would be a touch cautious of relying on this stock primarily for the dividend income.

It's important to note that companies having a consistent dividend policy will generate greater investor confidence than those having an erratic one. Still, investors need to consider a host of other factors, apart from dividend payments, when analysing a company. To that end, Chesapeake Utilities has 2 warning signs (and 1 which is significant) we think you should know about. Looking for more high-yielding dividend ideas?
