CenterPoint Energy (NYSE:CNP) Is Paying Out A Dividend Of $0.21
The board of CenterPoint Energy, Inc. (NYSE:CNP) has announced that it will pay a dividend of $0.21 per share on the 12th of December. The dividend yield is 2.9% based on this payment, which is a little bit low compared to the other companies in the industry.

CenterPoint Energy's Payment Could Potentially Have Solid Earnings Coverage
While yield is important, another factor to consider about a company's dividend is whether the current payout levels are feasible. Prior to this announcement, CenterPoint Energy's earnings easily covered the dividend, but free cash flows were negative. Since a dividend means the company is paying out cash to investors, this could prove to be a problem in the future.
Over the next year, EPS is forecast to expand by 31.7%. If the dividend continues on this path, the payout ratio could be 40% by next year, which we think can be pretty sustainable going forward.
Dividend Volatility
While the company has been paying a dividend for a long time, it has cut the dividend at least once in the last 10 years. Since 2014, the annual payment back then was $0.95, compared to the most recent full-year payment of $0.84. Doing the maths, this is a decline of about 1.2% per year. A company that decreases its dividend over time generally isn't what we are looking for.
We Could See CenterPoint Energy's Dividend Growing
With a relatively unstable dividend, it's even more important to evaluate if earnings per share is growing, which could point to a growing dividend in the future. We are encouraged to see that CenterPoint Energy has grown earnings per share at 6.3% per year over the past five years. The lack of cash flows does make us a bit cautious though, especially when it comes to the future of the dividend.
Our Thoughts On CenterPoint Energy's Dividend
Overall, we don't think this company makes a great dividend stock, even though the dividend wasn't cut this year. While the low payout ratio is a redeeming feature, this is offset by the minimal cash to cover the payments. We don't think CenterPoint Energy is a great stock to add to your portfolio if income is your focus.
It's important to note that companies having a consistent dividend policy will generate greater investor confidence than those having an erratic one.
