With EPS Growth And More, Alliant Energy (NASDAQ:LNT) Makes An Interesting Case
Investors are often guided by the idea of discovering 'the next big thing', even if that means buying 'story stocks' without any revenue, let alone profit. But the reality is that when a company loses money each year, for long enough, its investors will usually take their share of those losses. While a well funded company may sustain losses for years, it will need to generate a profit eventually, or else investors will move on and the company will wither away.
If this kind of company isn't your style, you like companies that generate revenue, and even earn profits, then you may well be interested in Alliant Energy (NASDAQ:LNT). While profit isn't the sole metric that should be considered when investing, it's worth recognising businesses that can consistently produce it.

Alliant Energy's Improving Profits
Even with very modest growth rates, a company will usually do well if it improves earnings per share (EPS) year after year. So it's easy to see why many investors focus in on EPS growth. Over the last year, Alliant Energy increased its EPS from US$2.62 to US$2.72. That's a fair increase of 4.0%.
It's often helpful to take a look at earnings before interest and tax (EBIT) margins, as well as revenue growth, to get another take on the quality of the company's growth. We note that while EBIT margins have improved from 21% to 23%, the company has actually reported a fall in revenue by 5.5%. That's not a good look.

Are Alliant Energy Insiders Aligned With All Shareholders?
It's said that there's no smoke without fire. For investors, insider buying is often the smoke that indicates which stocks could set the market alight. This view is based on the possibility that stock purchases signal bullishness on behalf of the buyer. However, insiders are sometimes wrong, and we don't know the exact thinking behind their acquisitions.
We note that Alliant Energy insiders spent US$78k on stock, over the last year; in contrast, we didn't see any selling. That's nice to see, because it suggests insiders are optimistic.
Along with the insider buying, another encouraging sign for Alliant Energy is that insiders, as a group, have a considerable shareholding. Indeed, they hold US$28m worth of its stock. That's a lot of money, and no small incentive to work hard. While their ownership only accounts for 0.2%, this is still a considerable amount at stake to encourage the business to maintain a strategy that will deliver value to shareholders.
Shareholders have more to smile about than just insiders adding more shares to their already sizeable holdings. That's because Alliant Energy's CEO, Lisa Barton, is paid at a relatively modest level when compared to other CEOs for companies of this size. For companies with market capitalisations over US$8.0b, like Alliant Energy, the median CEO pay is around US$13m.
The Alliant Energy CEO received total compensation of just US$5.7m in the year to December 2023. That looks like a modest pay packet, and may hint at a certain respect for the interests of shareholders. CEO remuneration levels are not the most important metric for investors, but when the pay is modest, that does support enhanced alignment between the CEO and the ordinary shareholders. It can also be a sign of a culture of integrity, in a broader sense.
Is Alliant Energy Worth Keeping An Eye On?
One important encouraging feature of Alliant Energy is that it is growing profits. In addition, insiders have been busy adding to their sizeable holdings in the company.
