Alliant Energy (NASDAQ:LNT) Is Paying Out A Larger Dividend Than Last Year
Alliant Energy Corporation (NASDAQ:LNT) has announced that it will be increasing its dividend from last year's comparable payment on the 15th of May to $0.4525. The payment will take the dividend yield to 3.3%, which is in line with the average for the industry.

Alliant Energy's Dividend Is Well Covered By Earnings
Solid dividend yields are great, but they only really help us if the payment is sustainable. Based on the last payment, Alliant Energy's earnings were much higher than the dividend, but it wasn't converting those earnings into cash flow. Since a dividend means the company is paying out cash to investors, this could prove to be a problem in the future.
The next year is set to see EPS grow by 19.7%. If the dividend continues along recent trends, we estimate the payout ratio will be 57%, which is in the range that makes us comfortable with the sustainability of the dividend.
Alliant Energy Has A Solid Track Record
The company has an extended history of paying stable dividends. The dividend has gone from an annual total of $0.90 in 2013 to the most recent total annual payment of $1.81. This works out to be a compound annual growth rate (CAGR) of approximately 7.2% a year over that time. The dividend has been growing very nicely for a number of years, and has given its shareholders some nice income in their portfolios.
Alliant Energy Could Grow Its Dividend
Investors could be attracted to the stock based on the quality of its payment history. We are encouraged to see that Alliant Energy has grown earnings per share at 6.6% per year over the past five years. While on an earnings basis, this company looks appealing as an income stock, the cash payout ratio still makes us cautious.
In Summary
Overall, this is probably not a great income stock, even though the dividend is being raised at the moment. With cash flows lacking, it is difficult to see how the company can sustain a dividend payment. We don't think Alliant Energy is a great stock to add to your portfolio if income is your focus.
Market movements attest to how highly valued a consistent dividend policy is compared to one which is more unpredictable. Still, investors need to consider a host of other factors, apart from dividend payments, when analysing a company.
