Does P.A.M. Transportation Services (NASDAQ:PTSI) Have A Healthy Balance Sheet?

It's only natural to consider a company's balance sheet when you examine how risky it is, since debt is often involved when a business collapses. We note that P.A.M. Transportation Services, Inc. (NASDAQ:PTSI) does have debt on its balance sheet. But the more important question is: how much risk is that debt creating?

What Risk Does Debt Bring?

Debt and other liabilities become risky for a business when it cannot easily fulfill those obligations, either with free cash flow or by raising capital at an attractive price. If things get really bad, the lenders can take control of the business. However, a more frequent (but still costly) occurrence is where a company must issue shares at bargain-basement prices, permanently diluting shareholders, just to shore up its balance sheet. A Look At P.A.M. Transportation Services' Liabilities

According to the last reported balance sheet, P.A.M. Transportation Services had liabilities of US$148.3m due within 12 months, and liabilities of US$293.4m due beyond 12 months. Offsetting these obligations, it had cash of US$133.9m as well as receivables valued at US$142.2m due within 12 months. So its liabilities total US$165.7m more than the combination of its cash and short-term receivables.

This deficit isn't so bad because P.A.M. Transportation Services is worth US$610.1m, and thus could probably raise enough capital to shore up its balance sheet, if the need arose. But we definitely want to keep our eyes open to indications that its debt is bringing too much risk.

We measure a company's debt load relative to its earnings power by looking at its net debt divided by its earnings before interest, tax, depreciation, and amortization (EBITDA) and by calculating how easily its earnings before interest and tax (EBIT) cover its interest expense (interest cover). But we must concede we find its EBIT growth rate has the opposite effect. Looking at all the aforementioned factors together, it strikes us that P.A.M. Transportation Services can handle its debt fairly comfortably. Of course, while this leverage can enhance returns on equity, it does bring more risk, so it's worth keeping an eye on this one.
