uCloudlink Group Inc.'s (NASDAQ:UCL) 25% Dip In Price Shows Sentiment Is Matching Earnings
Unfortunately for some shareholders, the uCloudlink Group Inc. (NASDAQ:UCL) share price has dived 25% in the last thirty days, prolonging recent pain. Instead of being rewarded, shareholders who have already held through the last twelve months are now sitting on a 30% share price drop.
In spite of the heavy fall in price, uCloudlink Group's price-to-earnings (or "P/E") ratio of 8.8x might still make it look like a buy right now compared to the market in the United States, where around half of the companies have P/E ratios above 17x and even P/E's above 30x are quite common. Nonetheless, we'd need to dig a little deeper to determine if there is a rational basis for the reduced P/E.
With earnings growth that's superior to most other companies of late, uCloudlink Group has been doing relatively well. It might be that many expect the strong earnings performance to degrade substantially, which has repressed the P/E. If not, then existing shareholders have reason to be quite optimistic about the future direction of the share price.

Is There Any Growth For uCloudlink Group?
There's an inherent assumption that a company should underperform the market for P/E ratios like uCloudlink Group's to be considered reasonable.
Retrospectively, the last year delivered an exceptional 60% gain to the company's bottom line. Although, its longer-term performance hasn't been as strong with three-year EPS growth being relatively non-existent overall. Accordingly, shareholders probably wouldn't have been overly satisfied with the unstable medium-term growth rates.
Shifting to the future, estimates from the lone analyst covering the company suggest earnings growth is heading into negative territory, declining 150% over the next year. That's not great when the rest of the market is expected to grow by 14%.
In light of this, it's understandable that uCloudlink Group's P/E would sit below the majority of other companies. However, shrinking earnings are unlikely to lead to a stable P/E over the longer term. Even just maintaining these prices could be difficult to achieve as the weak outlook is weighing down the shares.
The Final Word
The softening of uCloudlink Group's shares means its P/E is now sitting at a pretty low level. Using the price-to-earnings ratio alone to determine if you should sell your stock isn't sensible, however it can be a practical guide to the company's future prospects.
We've established that uCloudlink Group maintains its low P/E on the weakness of its forecast for sliding earnings, as expected. At this stage investors feel the potential for an improvement in earnings isn't great enough to justify a higher P/E ratio. It's hard to see the share price rising strongly in the near future under these circumstances.
