The worst result, after buying shares in a company (assuming no leverage), would be if you lose all the money you put in. But on the bright side, you can make far more than 100% on a really good stock. For example, the T-Mobile US, Inc. (NASDAQ:TMUS) share price has soared 231% in the last half decade. Most would be very happy with that. On top of that, the share price is up 12% in about a quarter.

There is no denying that markets are sometimes efficient, but prices do not always reflect underlying business performance. One flawed but reasonable way to assess how sentiment around a company has changed is to compare the earnings per share (EPS) with the share price.

Over half a decade, T-Mobile US managed to grow its earnings per share at 8.0% a year. This EPS growth is slower than the share price growth of 27% per year, over the same period. So it's fair to assume the market has a higher opinion of the business than it did five years ago. And that's hardly shocking given the track record of growth. This favorable sentiment is reflected in its (fairly optimistic) P/E ratio of 66.85.

The image below shows how EPS has tracked over time (if you click on the image you can see greater detail).

A Different Perspective

T-Mobile US provided a TSR of 41% over the year. That's fairly close to the broader market return. That gain looks pretty satisfying, and it is even better than the five-year TSR of 27% per year. Even if the share price growth slows down from here, there's a good chance that this is business worth watching in the long term. While it is well worth considering the different impacts that market conditions can have on the share price, there are other factors that are even more important. Even so, be aware that T-Mobile US is showing 4 warning signs in our investment analysis , and 1 of those is a bit unpleasant...
