Does PAR Technology (NYSE:PAR) Have A Healthy Balance Sheet?
David Iben put it well when he said, 'Volatility is not a risk we care about. What we care about is avoiding the permanent loss of capital.' It's only natural to consider a company's balance sheet when you examine how risky it is, since debt is often involved when a business collapses. We can see that PAR Technology Corporation (NYSE:PAR) does use debt in its business. But the real question is whether this debt is making the company risky.
When Is Debt A Problem?
Debt and other liabilities become risky for a business when it cannot easily fulfill those obligations, either with free cash flow or by raising capital at an attractive price. If things get really bad, the lenders can take control of the business. However, a more frequent (but still costly) occurrence is where a company must issue shares at bargain-basement prices, permanently diluting shareholders, just to shore up its balance sheet. Of course, plenty of companies use debt to fund growth, without any negative consequences. When we think about a company's use of debt, we first look at cash and debt together.
What Is PAR Technology's Debt?
As you can see below, PAR Technology had US$392.3m of debt, at March 2025, which is about the same as the year before. You can click the chart for greater detail. However, it does have US$92.2m in cash offsetting this, leading to net debt of about US$300.1m.
A Look At PAR Technology's Liabilities
We can see from the most recent balance sheet that PAR Technology had liabilities of US$107.5m falling due within a year, and liabilities of US$422.1m due beyond that. Offsetting this, it had US$92.2m in cash and US$70.0m in receivables that were due within 12 months. So its liabilities outweigh the sum of its cash and (near-term) receivables by US$367.4m.
Given PAR Technology has a market capitalization of US$2.84b, it's hard to believe these liabilities pose much threat. But there are sufficient liabilities that we would certainly recommend shareholders continue to monitor the balance sheet, going forward. When analysing debt levels, the balance sheet is the obvious place to start. But it is future earnings, more than anything, that will determine PAR Technology's ability to maintain a healthy balance sheet going forward. Over 12 months, PAR Technology reported revenue of US$384m, which is a gain of 38%, although it did not report any earnings before interest and tax. With any luck the company will be able to grow its way to profitability.
Caveat Emptor
While we can certainly appreciate PAR Technology's revenue growth, its earnings before interest and tax (EBIT) loss is not ideal. Indeed, it lost US$69m at the EBIT level. Considering that alongside the liabilities mentioned above does not give us much confidence that company should be using so much debt. Quite frankly we think the balance sheet is far from match-fit, although it could be improved with time. Another cause for caution is that is bled US$26m in negative free cash flow over the last twelve months. So suffice it to say we do consider the stock to be risky. There's no doubt that we learn most about debt from the balance sheet. However, not all investment risk resides within the balance sheet - far from it. For example - PAR Technology has 1 warning sign we think you should be aware of.
