While shareholders of Eastman Kodak (NYSE:KODK) are in the black over 5 years, those who bought a week ago aren't so fortunate
It hasn't been the best quarter for Eastman Kodak Company (NYSE:KODK) shareholders, since the share price has fallen 17% in that time. But in stark contrast, the returns over the last half decade have impressed. We think most investors would be happy with the 161% return, over that period. We think it's more important to dwell on the long term returns than the short term returns. The more important question is whether the stock is too cheap or too expensive today.
While this past week has detracted from the company's five-year return, let's look at the recent trends of the underlying business and see if the gains have been in alignment.
In his essay The Superinvestors of Graham-and-Doddsville Warren Buffett described how share prices do not always rationally reflect the value of a business. One flawed but reasonable way to assess how sentiment around a company has changed is to compare the earnings per share (EPS) with the share price.
During the last half decade, Eastman Kodak became profitable. That kind of transition can be an inflection point that justifies a strong share price gain, just as we have seen here. Given that the company made a profit three years ago, but not five years ago, it is worth looking at the share price returns over the last three years, too. In fact, the Eastman Kodak stock price is 16% lower in the last three years. Meanwhile, EPS is up 51% per year. It would appear there's a real mismatch between the increasing EPS and the share price, which has declined -6% a year for three years.
The graphic below depicts how EPS has changed over time (unveil the exact values by clicking on the image).
We like that insiders have been buying shares in the last twelve months. Even so, future earnings will be far more important to whether current shareholders make money. Before buying or selling a stock, we always recommend a close examination of historic growth trends, available here. .
A Different Perspective
We're pleased to report that Eastman Kodak shareholders have received a total shareholder return of 8.9% over one year. However, the TSR over five years, coming in at 21% per year, is even more impressive. The pessimistic view would be that be that the stock has its best days behind it, but on the other hand the price might simply be moderating while the business itself continues to execute. Investors who like to make money usually check up on insider purchases, such as the price paid, and total amount bought.
