Return Trends At Fabrinet (NYSE:FN) Aren't Appealing
To find a multi-bagger stock, what are the underlying trends we should look for in a business? In a perfect world, we'd like to see a company investing more capital into its business and ideally the returns earned from that capital are also increasing. If you see this, it typically means it's a company with a great business model and plenty of profitable reinvestment opportunities. With that in mind, the ROCE of Fabrinet (NYSE:FN) looks decent, right now, so lets see what the trend of returns can tell us.
What Is Return On Capital Employed (ROCE)?
If you haven't worked with ROCE before, it measures the 'return' (pre-tax profit) a company generates from capital employed in its business. Analysts use this formula to calculate it for Fabrinet:
Return on Capital Employed = Earnings Before Interest and Tax (EBIT) ÷ (Total Assets - Current Liabilities)
0.15 = US$191m ÷ (US$1.8b - US$503m) (Based on the trailing twelve months to March 2022).
So, Fabrinet has an ROCE of 15%. In absolute terms, that's a satisfactory return, but compared to the Electronic industry average of 12% it's much better.

What Does the ROCE Trend For Fabrinet Tell Us?
While the returns on capital are good, they haven't moved much. Over the past five years, ROCE has remained relatively flat at around 15% and the business has deployed 85% more capital into its operations. 15% is a pretty standard return, and it provides some comfort knowing that Fabrinet has consistently earned this amount. Over long periods of time, returns like these might not be too exciting, but with consistency they can pay off in terms of share price returns.
The Bottom Line
To sum it up, Fabrinet has simply been reinvesting capital steadily, at those decent rates of return. And long term investors would be thrilled with the 151% return they've received over the last five years. So while investors seem to be recognizing these promising trends, we still believe the stock deserves further research.
