Coherent Corp.'s (NYSE:COHR) Shares Climb 33% But Its Business Is Yet to Catch Up

Coherent Corp. (NYSE:COHR) shares have continued their recent momentum with a 33% gain in the last month alone. The last 30 days bring the annual gain to a very sharp 88%.

After such a large jump in price, you could be forgiven for thinking Coherent is a stock to steer clear of with a price-to-sales ratios (or "P/S") of 4.8x, considering almost half the companies in the United States' Electronic industry have P/S ratios below 2.6x. Nonetheless, we'd need to dig a little deeper to determine if there is a rational basis for the highly elevated P/S.

What Does Coherent's P/S Mean For Shareholders?

There hasn't been much to differentiate Coherent's and the industry's revenue growth lately. Perhaps the market is expecting future revenue performance to improve, justifying the currently elevated P/S. However, if this isn't the case, investors might get caught out paying too much for the stock.

Do Revenue Forecasts Match The High P/S Ratio?

There's an inherent assumption that a company should far outperform the industry for P/S ratios like Coherent's to be considered reasonable.

Retrospectively, the last year delivered an exceptional 21% gain to the company's top line. Pleasingly, revenue has also lifted 56% in aggregate from three years ago, thanks to the last 12 months of growth. Accordingly, shareholders would have definitely welcomed those medium-term rates of revenue growth.

Shifting to the future, estimates from the analysts covering the company suggest revenue should grow by 14% over the next year. With the industry predicted to deliver 18% growth, the company is positioned for a weaker revenue result.

With this in consideration, we believe it doesn't make sense that Coherent's P/S is outpacing its industry peers. It seems most investors are hoping for a turnaround in the company's business prospects, but the analyst cohort is not so confident this will happen. Only the boldest would assume these prices are sustainable as this level of revenue growth is likely to weigh heavily on the share price eventually.

The Bottom Line On Coherent's P/S

Shares in Coherent have seen a strong upwards swing lately, which has really helped boost its P/S figure. We'd say the price-to-sales ratio's power isn't primarily as a valuation instrument but rather to gauge current investor sentiment and future expectations.

We've concluded that Coherent currently trades on a much higher than expected P/S since its forecast growth is lower than the wider industry. The weakness in the company's revenue estimate doesn't bode well for the elevated P/S, which could take a fall if the revenue sentiment doesn't improve. Unless these conditions improve markedly, it's very challenging to accept these prices as being reasonable.
