It is hard to get excited after looking at TTM Technologies' (NASDAQ:TTMI) recent performance, when its stock has declined 13% over the past month. However, the company's fundamentals look pretty decent, and long-term financials are usually aligned with future market price movements. In this article, we decided to focus on TTM Technologies' ROE.

ROE or return on equity is a useful tool to assess how effectively a company can generate returns on the investment it received from its shareholders. In simpler terms, it measures the profitability of a company in relation to shareholder's equity.

How Is ROE Calculated?

The formula for return on equity is:

Return on Equity = Net Profit (from continuing operations) ÷ Shareholders' Equity

So, based on the above formula, the ROE for TTM Technologies is:

3.6% = US$56m ÷ US$1.6b (Based on the trailing twelve months to December 2024).

The 'return' is the amount earned after tax over the last twelve months. So, this means that for every $1 of its shareholder's investments, the company generates a profit of $0.04.

Why Is ROE Important For Earnings Growth?

Thus far, we have learned that ROE measures how efficiently a company is generating its profits. Based on how much of its profits the company chooses to reinvest or "retain", we are then able to evaluate a company's future ability to generate profits. Assuming everything else remains unchanged, the higher the ROE and profit retention, the higher the growth rate of a company compared to companies that don't necessarily bear these characteristics.

TTM Technologies' Earnings Growth And 3.6% ROE

It is hard to argue that TTM Technologies' ROE is much good in and of itself. Even compared to the average industry ROE of 10%, the company's ROE is quite dismal. TTM Technologies was still able to see a decent net income growth of 13% over the past five years. We believe that there might be other aspects that are positively influencing the company's earnings growth. Such as - high earnings retention or an efficient management in place.

As a next step, we compared TTM Technologies' net income growth with the industry and found that the company has a similar growth figure when compared with the industry average growth rate of 14% in the same period.

Is TTM Technologies Making Efficient Use Of Its Profits?
