Why Investors Shouldn't Be Surprised By Inseego Corp.'s (NASDAQ:INSG) 28% Share Price Plunge
The Inseego Corp. (NASDAQ:INSG) share price has softened a substantial 28% over the previous 30 days, handing back much of the gains the stock has made lately. Longer-term shareholders would now have taken a real hit with the stock declining 5.1% in the last year.
Following the heavy fall in price, Inseego may be sending buy signals at present with its price-to-sales (or "P/S") ratio of 1x, considering almost half of all companies in the Communications industry in the United States have P/S ratios greater than 2x and even P/S higher than 5x aren't out of the ordinary. Nonetheless, we'd need to dig a little deeper to determine if there is a rational basis for the reduced P/S.

How Inseego Has Been Performing
While the industry has experienced revenue growth lately, Inseego's revenue has gone into reverse gear, which is not great. The P/S ratio is probably low because investors think this poor revenue performance isn't going to get any better. If this is the case, then existing shareholders will probably struggle to get excited about the future direction of the share price.

In order to justify its P/S ratio, Inseego would need to produce sluggish growth that's trailing the industry.
Retrospectively, the last year delivered a frustrating 7.4% decrease to the company's top line. As a result, revenue from three years ago have also fallen 37% overall. Therefore, it's fair to say the revenue growth recently has been undesirable for the company.
Turning to the outlook, the next year should generate growth of 8.7% as estimated by the four analysts watching the company. That's shaping up to be materially lower than the 13% growth forecast for the broader industry.
With this in consideration, its clear as to why Inseego's P/S is falling short industry peers. Apparently many shareholders weren't comfortable holding on while the company is potentially eyeing a less prosperous future.
What Does Inseego's P/S Mean For Investors?
Inseego's P/S has taken a dip along with its share price. Using the price-to-sales ratio alone to determine if you should sell your stock isn't sensible, however it can be a practical guide to the company's future prospects.
We've established that Inseego maintains its low P/S on the weakness of its forecast growth being lower than the wider industry, as expected. Right now shareholders are accepting the low P/S as they concede future revenue probably won't provide any pleasant surprises. The company will need a change of fortune to justify the P/S rising higher in the future.
Having said that, be aware Inseego is showing 2 warning signs in our investment analysis, and 1 of those is a bit concerning.
