There's No Escaping Inseego Corp.'s (NASDAQ:INSG) Muted Revenues Despite A 25% Share Price Rise
Inseego Corp. (NASDAQ:INSG) shares have continued their recent momentum with a 25% gain in the last month alone. Not all shareholders will be feeling jubilant, since the share price is still down a very disappointing 26% in the last twelve months.
Although its price has surged higher, Inseego may still be sending buy signals at present with its price-to-sales (or "P/S") ratio of 1.2x, considering almost half of all companies in the Communications industry in the United States have P/S ratios greater than 2.2x and even P/S higher than 5x aren't out of the ordinary. Nonetheless, we'd need to dig a little deeper to determine if there is a rational basis for the reduced P/S.

What Does Inseego's P/S Mean For Shareholders?
Recent times haven't been great for Inseego as its revenue has been rising slower than most other companies. It seems that many are expecting the uninspiring revenue performance to persist, which has repressed the growth of the P/S ratio. If this is the case, then existing shareholders will probably struggle to get excited about the future direction of the share price.

In order to justify its P/S ratio, Inseego would need to produce sluggish growth that's trailing the industry.
Taking a look back first, we see that the company managed to grow revenues by a handy 4.6% last year. Ultimately though, it couldn't turn around the poor performance of the prior period, with revenue shrinking 34% in total over the last three years. So unfortunately, we have to acknowledge that the company has not done a great job of growing revenue over that time.
Looking ahead now, revenue is anticipated to slump, contracting by 0.6% during the coming year according to the three analysts following the company. With the industry predicted to deliver 13% growth, that's a disappointing outcome.
In light of this, it's understandable that Inseego's P/S would sit below the majority of other companies. Nonetheless, there's no guarantee the P/S has reached a floor yet with revenue going in reverse. There's potential for the P/S to fall to even lower levels if the company doesn't improve its top-line growth.
The Key Takeaway
The latest share price surge wasn't enough to lift Inseego's P/S close to the industry median. It's argued the price-to-sales ratio is an inferior measure of value within certain industries, but it can be a powerful business sentiment indicator.
With revenue forecasts that are inferior to the rest of the industry, it's no surprise that Inseego's P/S is on the lower end of the spectrum. At this stage investors feel the potential for an improvement in revenue isn't great enough to justify a higher P/S ratio. It's hard to see the share price rising strongly in the near future under these circumstances.
It's always necessary to consider the ever-present spectre of investment risk. We've identified 4 warning signs with Inseego (at least 1 which is a bit unpleasant), and understanding them should be part of your investment process.
