One thing we could say about the analysts on Genasys Inc. (NASDAQ:GNSS) - they aren't optimistic, having just made a major negative revision to their near-term (statutory) forecasts for the organization. Both revenue and earnings per share (EPS) forecasts went under the knife, suggesting the analysts have soured majorly on the business.

Following this downgrade, Genasys' three analysts are forecasting 2024 revenues to be US$35m, approximately in line with the last 12 months. Losses are forecast to hold steady at around US$0.57 per share. Yet prior to the latest estimates, the analysts had been forecasting revenues of US$49m and losses of US$0.27 per share in 2024. Ergo, there's been a clear change in sentiment, with the analysts administering a notable cut to this year's revenue estimates, while at the same time increasing their loss per share forecasts.

Looking at the bigger picture now, one of the ways we can make sense of these forecasts is to see how they measure up against both past performance and industry growth estimates. We would highlight that Genasys' revenue growth is expected to slow, with the forecast 1.4% annualised growth rate until the end of 2024 being well below the historical 7.0% p.a. growth over the last five years. Compare this against other companies (with analyst forecasts) in the industry, which are in aggregate expected to see revenue growth of 6.1% annually. Factoring in the forecast slowdown in growth, it seems obvious that Genasys is also expected to grow slower than other industry participants.

The Bottom Line

The most important thing to take away is that analysts increased their loss per share estimates for this year. Unfortunately analysts also downgraded their revenue estimates, and industry data suggests that Genasys' revenues are expected to grow slower than the wider market. After a cut like that, investors could be forgiven for thinking analysts are a lot more bearish on Genasys, and a few readers might choose to steer clear of the stock.

With that said, the long-term trajectory of the company's earnings is a lot more important than next year. We have estimates - from multiple Genasys analysts - going out to 2026, and you can see them free on our platform here.
