Do Franklin Wireless's (NASDAQ:FKWL) Earnings Warrant Your Attention?
Like a puppy chasing its tail, some new investors often chase 'the next big thing', even if that means buying 'story stocks' without revenue, let alone profit. Unfortunately, high risk investments often have little probability of ever paying off, and many investors pay a price to learn their lesson.
If, on the other hand, you like companies that have revenue, and even earn profits, then you may well be interested in Franklin Wireless (NASDAQ:FKWL). While profit is not necessarily a social good, it's easy to admire a business that can consistently produce it. While a well funded company may sustain losses for years, unless its owners have an endless appetite for subsidizing the customer, it will need to generate a profit eventually, or else breathe its last breath.

Franklin Wireless's Improving Profits
In business, though not in life, profits are a key measure of success; and share prices tend to reflect earnings per share (EPS). So like the hint of a smile on a face that I love, growing EPS generally makes me look twice. You can imagine, then, that it almost knocked my socks off when I realized that Franklin Wireless grew its EPS from US$0.098 to US$1.93, in one short year. When you see earnings grow that quickly, it often means good things ahead for the company. But the key is discerning whether something profound has changed, or if this is a just a one-off boost.
One way to double-check a company's growth is to look at how its revenue, and earnings before interest and tax (EBIT) margins are changing. The good news is that Franklin Wireless is growing revenues, and EBIT margins improved by 10.5 percentage points to 13%, over the last year. Ticking those two boxes is a good sign of growth, in my book.

Franklin Wireless isn't a huge company, given its market capitalization of US$108m. That makes it extra important to check on its balance sheet strength.
Are Franklin Wireless Insiders Aligned With All Shareholders?
I like company leaders to have some skin in the game, so to speak, because it increases alignment of incentives between the people running the business, and its true owners. So it is good to see that Franklin Wireless insiders have a significant amount of capital invested in the stock. To be specific, they have US$25m worth of shares. That's a lot of money, and no small incentive to work hard. Those holdings account for over 23% of the company; visible skin in the game.
It means a lot to see insiders invested in the business, but I find myself wondering if remuneration policies are shareholder friendly. Well, based on the CEO pay, I'd say they are indeed. I discovered that the median total compensation for the CEOs of companies like Franklin Wireless with market caps under US$200m is about US$527k.
The CEO of Franklin Wireless only received US$245k in total compensation for the year ending . That looks like modest pay to me, and may hint at a certain respect for the interests of shareholders. CEO remuneration levels are not the most important metric for investors, but when the pay is modest, that does support enhanced alignment between the CEO and the ordinary shareholders. I'd also argue reasonable pay levels attest to good decision making more generally.
Should You Add Franklin Wireless To Your Watchlist?
Franklin Wireless's earnings have taken off like any random crypto-currency did, back in 2017. The sweetener is that insiders have a mountain of stock, and the CEO remuneration is quite reasonable. The strong EPS improvement suggests the businesses is humming along. Franklin Wireless certainly ticks a few of my boxes, so I think it's probably well worth further consideration. Even so, be aware that Franklin Wireless is showing 3 warning signs in our investment analysis , and 1 of those is a bit concerning...
