Here's What To Make Of PC Connection's (NASDAQ:CNXN) Decelerating Rates Of Return
Finding a business that has the potential to grow substantially is not easy, but it is possible if we look at a few key financial metrics. Ideally, a business will show two trends; firstly a growing return on capital employed (ROCE) and secondly, an increasing amount of capital employed. Ultimately, this demonstrates that it's a business that is reinvesting profits at increasing rates of return. That's why when we briefly looked at PC Connection's (NASDAQ:CNXN) ROCE trend, we were pretty happy with what we saw.
Understanding Return On Capital Employed (ROCE)
For those who don't know, ROCE is a measure of a company's yearly pre-tax profit (its return), relative to the capital employed in the business. To calculate this metric for PC Connection, this is the formula:
Return on Capital Employed = Earnings Before Interest and Tax (EBIT) ÷ (Total Assets - Current Liabilities)
0.15 = US$121m ÷ (US$1.1b - US$311m) (Based on the trailing twelve months to December 2022).
Thus, PC Connection has an ROCE of 15%. In absolute terms, that's a satisfactory return, but compared to the Electronic industry average of 12% it's much better.

What Can We Tell From PC Connection's ROCE Trend?
While the current returns on capital are decent, they haven't changed much. The company has employed 58% more capital in the last five years, and the returns on that capital have remained stable at 15%. 15% is a pretty standard return, and it provides some comfort knowing that PC Connection has consistently earned this amount. Stable returns in this ballpark can be unexciting, but if they can be maintained over the long run, they often provide nice rewards to shareholders.
What We Can Learn From PC Connection's ROCE
In the end, PC Connection has proven its ability to adequately reinvest capital at good rates of return. Therefore it's no surprise that shareholders have earned a respectable 68% return if they held over the last five years. So while investors seem to be recognizing these promising trends, we still believe the stock deserves further research.
While PC Connection doesn't shine too bright in this respect, it's still worth seeing if the company is trading at attractive prices. You can find that out with our FREE intrinsic value estimation on our platform.
