ReposiTrak, Inc.'s (NYSE:TRAK) P/E Is Still On The Mark Following 28% Share Price Bounce
ReposiTrak, Inc. (NYSE:TRAK) shareholders have had their patience rewarded with a 28% share price jump in the last month. The last 30 days bring the annual gain to a very sharp 92%.
Since its price has surged higher, ReposiTrak's price-to-earnings (or "P/E") ratio of 67.2x might make it look like a strong sell right now compared to the market in the United States, where around half of the companies have P/E ratios below 18x and even P/E's below 10x are quite common. However, the P/E might be quite high for a reason and it requires further investigation to determine if it's justified.
With its earnings growth in positive territory compared to the declining earnings of most other companies, ReposiTrak has been doing quite well of late. It seems that many are expecting the company to continue defying the broader market adversity, which has increased investors’ willingness to pay up for the stock. You'd really hope so, otherwise you're paying a pretty hefty price for no particular reason.

In order to justify its P/E ratio, ReposiTrak would need to produce outstanding growth well in excess of the market.
Taking a look back first, we see that the company managed to grow earnings per share by a handy 11% last year. The latest three year period has also seen an excellent 95% overall rise in EPS, aided somewhat by its short-term performance. Therefore, it's fair to say the earnings growth recently has been superb for the company.
Turning to the outlook, the next year should generate growth of 16% as estimated by the lone analyst watching the company. Meanwhile, the rest of the market is forecast to only expand by 13%, which is noticeably less attractive.
In light of this, it's understandable that ReposiTrak's P/E sits above the majority of other companies. It seems most investors are expecting this strong future growth and are willing to pay more for the stock.
The Bottom Line On ReposiTrak's P/E
Shares in ReposiTrak have built up some good momentum lately, which has really inflated its P/E. Using the price-to-earnings ratio alone to determine if you should sell your stock isn't sensible, however it can be a practical guide to the company's future prospects.
We've established that ReposiTrak maintains its high P/E on the strength of its forecast growth being higher than the wider market, as expected. Right now shareholders are comfortable with the P/E as they are quite confident future earnings aren't under threat. It's hard to see the share price falling strongly in the near future under these circumstances.
