Perfect Corp.'s (NYSE:PERF) 27% Share Price Surge Not Quite Adding Up
Perfect Corp. (NYSE:PERF) shares have continued their recent momentum with a 27% gain in the last month alone. Looking further back, the 12% rise over the last twelve months isn't too bad notwithstanding the strength over the last 30 days.
Although its price has surged higher, it's still not a stretch to say that Perfect's price-to-sales (or "P/S") ratio of 4.9x right now seems quite "middle-of-the-road" compared to the Software industry in the United States, where the median P/S ratio is around 5.6x. Although, it's not wise to simply ignore the P/S without explanation as investors may be disregarding a distinct opportunity or a costly mistake.

How Perfect Has Been Performing
Perfect's revenue growth of late has been pretty similar to most other companies. Perhaps the market is expecting future revenue performance to show no drastic signs of changing, justifying the P/S being at current levels. If this is the case, then at least existing shareholders won't be losing sleep over the current share price.
Keen to find out how analysts think Perfect's future stacks up against the industry? In that case, our free report is a great place to start. What Are Revenue Growth Metrics Telling Us About The P/S?
Perfect's P/S ratio would be typical for a company that's only expected to deliver moderate growth, and importantly, perform in line with the industry.
Taking a look back first, we see that the company grew revenue by an impressive 16% last year. The latest three year period has also seen an excellent 56% overall rise in revenue, aided by its short-term performance. Therefore, it's fair to say the revenue growth recently has been superb for the company.
Turning to the outlook, the next three years should generate growth of 16% per annum as estimated by the six analysts watching the company. With the industry predicted to deliver 20% growth per year, the company is positioned for a weaker revenue result.
With this information, we find it interesting that Perfect is trading at a fairly similar P/S compared to the industry. Apparently many investors in the company are less bearish than analysts indicate and aren't willing to let go of their stock right now. These shareholders may be setting themselves up for future disappointment if the P/S falls to levels more in line with the growth outlook.
The Bottom Line On Perfect's P/S
Perfect's stock has a lot of momentum behind it lately, which has brought its P/S level with the rest of the industry. It's argued the price-to-sales ratio is an inferior measure of value within certain industries, but it can be a powerful business sentiment indicator.
Given that Perfect's revenue growth projections are relatively subdued in comparison to the wider industry, it comes as a surprise to see it trading at its current P/S ratio. When we see companies with a relatively weaker revenue outlook compared to the industry, we suspect the share price is at risk of declining, sending the moderate P/S lower. A positive change is needed in order to justify the current price-to-sales ratio.
