Investors Appear Satisfied With CI&T Inc's (NYSE:CINT) Prospects As Shares Rocket 30%

CI&T Inc (NYSE:CINT) shareholders are no doubt pleased to see that the share price has bounced 30% in the last month, although it is still struggling to make up recently lost ground. But not all shareholders will be feeling jubilant, since the share price is still down a very disappointing 29% in the last twelve months.

Since its price has surged higher, given close to half the companies in the United States have price-to-earnings ratios (or "P/E's") below 14x, you may consider CI&T as a stock to avoid entirely with its 41.7x P/E ratio. However, the P/E might be quite high for a reason and it requires further investigation to determine if it's justified.

With earnings growth that's superior to most other companies of late, CI&T has been doing relatively well. It seems that many are expecting the strong earnings performance to persist, which has raised the P/E. If not, then existing shareholders might be a little nervous about the viability of the share price.

Does Growth Match The High P/E?

CI&T's P/E ratio would be typical for a company that's expected to deliver very strong growth, and importantly, perform much better than the market.

If we review the last year of earnings growth, the company posted a worthy increase of 14%. The latest three year period has also seen an excellent 126% overall rise in EPS, aided somewhat by its short-term performance. Accordingly, shareholders would have probably welcomed those medium-term rates of earnings growth.

Turning to the outlook, the next year should generate growth of 48% as estimated by the four analysts watching the company. That's shaping up to be materially higher than the 7.1% growth forecast for the broader market.

With this information, we can see why CI&T is trading at such a high P/E compared to the market. Apparently shareholders aren't keen to offload something that is potentially eyeing a more prosperous future.

The Bottom Line On CI&T's P/E

CI&T's P/E is flying high just like its stock has during the last month. Typically, we'd caution against reading too much into price-to-earnings ratios when settling on investment decisions, though it can reveal plenty about what other market participants think about the company.

As we suspected, our examination of CI&T's analyst forecasts revealed that its superior earnings outlook is contributing to its high P/E. Right now shareholders are comfortable with the P/E as they are quite confident future earnings aren't under threat. Unless these conditions change, they will continue to provide strong support to the share price.
