Risks Still Elevated At These Prices As C3.ai, Inc. (NYSE:AI) Shares Dive 30%
The C3.ai, Inc. (NYSE:AI) share price has fared very poorly over the last month, falling by a substantial 30%. For any long-term shareholders, the last month ends a year to forget by locking in a 63% share price decline.
Even after such a large drop in price, it's still not a stretch to say that C3.ai's price-to-sales (or "P/S") ratio of 4.8x right now seems quite "middle-of-the-road" compared to the Software industry in the United States, where the median P/S ratio is around 4.4x. However, investors might be overlooking a clear opportunity or potential setback if there is no rational basis for the P/S.

What Does C3.ai's Recent Performance Look Like?
Recent times haven't been great for C3.ai as its revenue has been rising slower than most other companies. It might be that many expect the uninspiring revenue performance to strengthen positively, which has kept the P/S ratio from falling. You'd really hope so, otherwise you're paying a relatively elevated price for a company with this sort of growth profile.
Keen to find out how analysts think C3.ai's future stacks up against the industry? In that case, our free report is a great place to start. How Is C3.ai's Revenue Growth Trending?
C3.ai's P/S ratio would be typical for a company that's only expected to deliver moderate growth, and importantly, perform in line with the industry.
Retrospectively, the last year delivered a decent 14% gain to the company's revenues. The latest three year period has also seen an excellent 40% overall rise in revenue, aided somewhat by its short-term performance. Accordingly, shareholders would have definitely welcomed those medium-term rates of revenue growth.
Looking ahead now, revenue is anticipated to slump, contracting by 17% during the coming year according to the analysts following the company. That's not great when the rest of the industry is expected to grow by 21%.
In light of this, it's somewhat alarming that C3.ai's P/S sits in line with the majority of other companies. Apparently many investors in the company reject the analyst cohort's pessimism and aren't willing to let go of their stock right now. There's a good chance these shareholders are setting themselves up for future disappointment if the P/S falls to levels more in line with the negative growth outlook.
What Does C3.ai's P/S Mean For Investors?
C3.ai's plummeting stock price has brought its P/S back to a similar region as the rest of the industry. Generally, our preference is to limit the use of the price-to-sales ratio to establishing what the market thinks about the overall health of a company.
It appears that C3.ai currently trades on a higher than expected P/S for a company whose revenues are forecast to decline. When we see a gloomy outlook like this, our immediate thoughts are that the share price is at risk of declining, negatively impacting P/S. If the poor revenue outlook tells us one thing, it's that these current price levels could be unsustainable.
Having said that, be aware C3.ai is showing 3 warning signs in our investment analysis, and 1 of those is potentially serious.
Of course, profitable companies with a history of great earnings growth are generally safer bets. So you may wish to see this free collection of other companies that have reasonable P/E ratios and have grown earnings strongly.
