Time To Worry? Analysts Just Downgraded Their Veritone, Inc. (NASDAQ:VERI) Outlook
Market forces rained on the parade of Veritone, Inc. (NASDAQ:VERI) shareholders today, when the analysts downgraded their forecasts for this year. There was a fairly draconian cut to their revenue estimates, perhaps an implicit admission that previous forecasts were much too optimistic.
Following the downgrade, the current consensus from Veritone's seven analysts is for revenues of US$153m in 2022 which - if met - would reflect a modest 4.6% increase on its sales over the past 12 months. Losses are forecast to hold steady at around US$1.49. However, before this estimates update, the consensus had been expecting revenues of US$179m and US$1.37 per share in losses. So there's been quite a change-up of views after the recent consensus updates, with the analysts making a serious cut to their revenue forecasts while also expecting losses per share to increase.

The consensus price target fell 14% to US$12.86, implicitly signalling that lower earnings per share are a leading indicator for Veritone's valuation. It could also be instructive to look at the range of analyst estimates, to evaluate how different the outlier opinions are from the mean. There are some variant perceptions on Veritone, with the most bullish analyst valuing it at US$23.00 and the most bearish at US$10.00 per share. With such a wide range in price targets, the analysts are almost certainly betting on widely diverse outcomes for the underlying business. With this in mind, we wouldn't rely too heavily on the consensus price target, as it is just an average and analysts clearly have some deeply divergent views on the business.
Taking a look at the bigger picture now, one of the ways we can understand these forecasts is to see how they compare to both past performance and industry growth estimates. We would highlight that Veritone's revenue growth is expected to slow, with the forecast 9.5% annualised growth rate until the end of 2022 being well below the historical 43% p.a. growth over the last five years. Compare this against other companies (with analyst forecasts) in the industry, which are in aggregate expected to see revenue growth of 13% annually. So it's pretty clear that, while revenue growth is expected to slow down, the wider industry is also expected to grow faster than Veritone.
The Bottom Line
The most important thing to note from this downgrade is that the consensus increased its forecast losses this year, suggesting all may not be well at Veritone. Regrettably, they also downgraded their revenue estimates, and the latest forecasts imply the business will grow sales slower than the wider market. Furthermore, there was a cut to the price target, suggesting that the latest news has led to more pessimism about the intrinsic value of the business. Often, one downgrade can set off a daisy-chain of cuts, especially if an industry is in decline. So we wouldn't be surprised if the market became a lot more cautious on Veritone after today.
Still, the long-term prospects of the business are much more relevant than next year's earnings. At Simply Wall St, we have a full range of analyst estimates for Veritone going out to 2024, and you can see them free on our platform here.
