Lacklustre Performance Is Driving Veritone, Inc.'s (NASDAQ:VERI) 33% Price Drop
Veritone, Inc. (NASDAQ:VERI) shareholders won't be pleased to see that the share price has had a very rough month, dropping 33% and undoing the prior period's positive performance. For any long-term shareholders, the last month ends a year to forget by locking in a 62% share price decline.
Since its price has dipped substantially, Veritone's price-to-sales (or "P/S") ratio of 0.8x might make it look like a strong buy right now compared to the wider Software industry in the United States, where around half of the companies have P/S ratios above 4.5x and even P/S above 10x are quite common. Although, it's not wise to just take the P/S at face value as there may be an explanation why it's so limited.

What Does Veritone's P/S Mean For Shareholders?
Veritone hasn't been tracking well recently as its declining revenue compares poorly to other companies, which have seen some growth in their revenues on average. The P/S ratio is probably low because investors think this poor revenue performance isn't going to get any better. If you still like the company, you'd be hoping this isn't the case so that you could potentially pick up some stock while it's out of favour.

There's an inherent assumption that a company should far underperform the industry for P/S ratios like Veritone's to be considered reasonable.
In reviewing the last year of financials, we were disheartened to see the company's revenues fell to the tune of 4.9%. However, a few very strong years before that means that it was still able to grow revenue by an impressive 176% in total over the last three years. Accordingly, while they would have preferred to keep the run going, shareholders would definitely welcome the medium-term rates of revenue growth.
Turning to the outlook, the next year should bring diminished returns, with revenue decreasing 0.5% as estimated by the four analysts watching the company. That's not great when the rest of the industry is expected to grow by 13%.
With this information, we are not surprised that Veritone is trading at a P/S lower than the industry. However, shrinking revenues are unlikely to lead to a stable P/S over the longer term. There's potential for the P/S to fall to even lower levels if the company doesn't improve its top-line growth.
What Does Veritone's P/S Mean For Investors?
Veritone's P/S looks about as weak as its stock price lately. We'd say the price-to-sales ratio's power isn't primarily as a valuation instrument but rather to gauge current investor sentiment and future expectations.
With revenue forecasts that are inferior to the rest of the industry, it's no surprise that Veritone's P/S is on the lower end of the spectrum. Right now shareholders are accepting the low P/S as they concede future revenue probably won't provide any pleasant surprises. It's hard to see the share price rising strongly in the near future under these circumstances.
