Pulling back 9.7% this week, Roper Technologies' NASDAQ:ROP) five-year decline in earnings may be coming into investors focus

If you buy and hold a stock for many years, you'd hope to be making a profit. But more than that, you probably want to see it rise more than the market average. Unfortunately for shareholders, while the Roper Technologies, Inc. (NASDAQ:ROP) share price is up 69% in the last five years, that's less than the market return. Zooming in, the stock is actually down 2.0% in the last year.

Since the long term performance has been good but there's been a recent pullback of 9.7%, let's check if the fundamentals match the share price.

While the efficient markets hypothesis continues to be taught by some, it has been proven that markets are over-reactive dynamic systems, and investors are not always rational. One imperfect but simple way to consider how the market perception of a company has shifted is to compare the change in the earnings per share (EPS) with the share price movement.

During five years of share price growth, Roper Technologies actually saw its EPS drop 1.8% per year.

By glancing at these numbers, we'd posit that the decline in earnings per share is not representative of how the business has changed over the years. Therefore, it's worth taking a look at other metrics to try to understand the share price movements.

We doubt the modest 0.6% dividend yield is attracting many buyers to the stock. On the other hand, Roper Technologies' revenue is growing nicely, at a compound rate of 8.0% over the last five years. In that case, the company may be sacrificing current earnings per share to drive growth.

What About Dividends?

When looking at investment returns, it is important to consider the difference between total shareholder return (TSR) and share price return. Whereas the share price return only reflects the change in the share price, the TSR includes the value of dividends (assuming they were reinvested) and the benefit of any discounted capital raising or spin-off. Arguably, the TSR gives a more comprehensive picture of the return generated by a stock. In the case of Roper Technologies, it has a TSR of 74% for the last 5 years. That exceeds its share price return that we previously mentioned. This is largely a result of its dividend payments!

A Different Perspective

Although it hurts that Roper Technologies returned a loss of 1.4% in the last twelve months, the broader market was actually worse, returning a loss of 2.4%. Longer term investors wouldn't be so upset, since they would have made 12%, each year, over five years. It could be that the business is just facing some short term problems, but shareholders should keep a close eye on the fundamentals.
