Is It Time To Reassess MicroStrategy (MSTR) After The Recent Share Price Rebound?

  • This article examines whether Strategy, at around US$179.36, may be a bargain or a value trap by exploring what the current price could be implying about the stock.
  • The share price has moved sharply in the short term, with a 25% return over the last 7 days and 29.8% over the last 30 days, while year to date the return stands at 14.1% and the 1-year return is a 48.1% decline.
  • Investors have been reacting to recent coverage that revisits Strategy's longer-term track record, including its very large 3-year return of roughly 7x and its 163.4% return over 5 years. This context, combined with the recent 1-year pullback, has renewed attention on whether the current price still lines up with underlying fundamentals.
  • On Simply Wall St's valuation checks, Strategy records a value score of 4 out of 6, which suggests some measures point to undervaluation while others are more mixed. The sections that follow compare different valuation methods before turning to a broader way of thinking about value at the end of the article.

Approach 1: Strategy Discounted Cash Flow (DCF) Analysis

A Discounted Cash Flow model projects future cash flows and then discounts them back to today using a required rate of return, giving an estimate of what the business might be worth in $ right now.

For Strategy, the model used is a 2 Stage Free Cash Flow to Equity approach. The latest twelve month free cash flow is a loss of $87.71 million, so the valuation leans heavily on future cash flow projections rather than recent history. Analyst inputs and extrapolations point to free cash flow of $7,304.90 million in 2028, with ten year projections extending out to 2035, all converted into today’s dollars using a discount rate.

When all projected and discounted cash flows are summed, the DCF model points to an estimated intrinsic value of about $574.27 per share. Compared with the recent share price around $179.36, the model implies the stock is 68.8% undervalued based on these assumptions and inputs.

Result: UNDERVALUED

Our Discounted Cash Flow (DCF) analysis suggests Strategy is undervalued by 68.8%. Track this in your watchlist or portfolio, or discover 61 more high quality undervalued stocks.

Approach 2: Strategy Price vs Book

For companies where current profits may not fully capture the business story, the price to book, or P/B, ratio is often a useful cross check because it compares the share price with the accounting value of net assets. For profitable firms with steady returns on equity, investors usually expect higher P/B multiples when growth prospects appear stronger and risks look more contained, and lower P/B multiples when growth is uncertain or risks are higher.

Strategy currently trades on a P/B of 1.41x. This sits below the Software industry average P/B of 2.87x and also below the peer group average of 9.69x. On the surface, that points to a lower valuation relative to both the sector and closer comparables.

Simply Wall St’s Fair Ratio is a proprietary estimate of what a reasonable P/B might be for Strategy after adjusting for factors such as earnings growth profile, industry, profit margins, market value and company specific risks. Because it looks at these fundamentals in combination, it can be more tailored than a simple comparison with peers or broad industry averages, which may differ materially in size, risk or profitability. In this case, the Fair Ratio is not available, so it is not possible to say whether the current 1.41x P/B looks overvalued, undervalued or about right relative to that framework.

Upgrade Your Decision Making: Choose your Strategy Narrative

Earlier it was mentioned that there is an even better way to understand valuation. Narratives on Simply Wall St give you a clear story behind the numbers by connecting your view of Strategy’s business, your estimates for future revenue, earnings and margins, and your assumed fair value into a single framework. This framework sits on the Community page, updates automatically when fresh news or earnings arrive, and lets you compare that fair value with today’s price to decide if the stock fits your plan. This is why some investors currently anchor on a fair value near US$425 per share while others use a far higher figure such as US$705, reflecting very different views on the same company.

derek_3wsdg on Teladoc Health ·

You’ve overlooked the activist investor factor. Travis Cocke’s Voss has announced 5% ownership through a 13G filing. They’ve added to that 5% since, and in doing so, have created a structural trap door for 27.42 Million Shares actively sold short. Chuck will announce lots of positives on July 29 but it’s what Voss announces shortly after that will rock the overextended Teledoc shorts. The Walmart partnership is the tip of the iceberg. The market is missing the sheer regulatory and enterprise friction of modern corporate healthcare. Teladoc isn't a "consumer app"; it is the primary digital infrastructure integrated directly into the legacy backends of Tier-1 insurance companies and fortune 500 employers, covering 105 million+ lives. Teladoc is acting as the digital top-of-funnel engine for the world's largest retailer. If Voss pushes the narrative that Teladoc is effectively the outsourced digital brain of Walmart's entire healthcare footprint, the fair value shifts from a basic health multiple to an enterprise distribution premium. Additionally , we are in a structural gold rush for high-quality, legally compliant, longitudinal medical data to train vertical healthcare AI models. Large technology hyperscalers and pharmaceutical giants cannot simply scrape the internet for this; they need structured clinical inputs. Teladoc sits on one of the largest de-identified virtual medical datasets on earth. From the activist playbook , we’ll see Voss demand the immediate creation of a Data & Diagnostics Licensing Division, transforming a legacy liability into an incredibly high-margin, pure-software data asset that requires zero human clinician hours to scale. Chuck is doing great work and deserves credi5 for the Teledoc turnaround but it will be Travis Cocke who will be responsible for a share price way beyond your $15 valuation.
