MicroAlgo Inc. (NASDAQ:MLGO) Looks Inexpensive After Falling 26% But Perhaps Not Attractive Enough
Unfortunately for some shareholders, the MicroAlgo Inc. (NASDAQ:MLGO) share price has dived 26% in the last thirty days, prolonging recent pain. For any long-term shareholders, the last month ends a year to forget by locking in a 96% share price decline.
Since its price has dipped substantially, MicroAlgo may be sending buy signals at present with its price-to-sales (or "P/S") ratio of 0.9x, considering almost half of all companies in the IT industry in the United States have P/S ratios greater than 2.2x and even P/S higher than 9x aren't out of the ordinary. However, the P/S might be low for a reason and it requires further investigation to determine if it's justified.

What Does MicroAlgo's P/S Mean For Shareholders?
For example, consider that MicroAlgo's financial performance has been poor lately as its revenue has been in decline. One possibility is that the P/S is low because investors think the company won't do enough to avoid underperforming the broader industry in the near future. Those who are bullish on MicroAlgo will be hoping that this isn't the case so that they can pick up the stock at a lower valuation.

MicroAlgo's P/S ratio would be typical for a company that's only expected to deliver limited growth, and importantly, perform worse than the industry.
Taking a look back first, the company's revenue growth last year wasn't something to get excited about as it posted a disappointing decline of 28%. As a result, revenue from three years ago have also fallen 34% overall. So unfortunately, we have to acknowledge that the company has not done a great job of growing revenue over that time.
Comparing that to the industry, which is predicted to deliver 19% growth in the next 12 months, the company's downward momentum based on recent medium-term revenue results is a sobering picture.
With this information, we are not surprised that MicroAlgo is trading at a P/S lower than the industry. Nonetheless, there's no guarantee the P/S has reached a floor yet with revenue going in reverse. Even just maintaining these prices could be difficult to achieve as recent revenue trends are already weighing down the shares.
The Key Takeaway
MicroAlgo's P/S has taken a dip along with its share price. Generally, our preference is to limit the use of the price-to-sales ratio to establishing what the market thinks about the overall health of a company.
It's no surprise that MicroAlgo maintains its low P/S off the back of its sliding revenue over the medium-term. At this stage investors feel the potential for an improvement in revenue isn't great enough to justify a higher P/S ratio. Given the current circumstances, it seems unlikely that the share price will experience any significant movement in either direction in the near future if recent medium-term revenue trends persist.
