MongoDB, Inc.'s (NASDAQ:MDB) 26% Share Price Surge Not Quite Adding Up

Despite an already strong run, MongoDB, Inc. (NASDAQ:MDB) shares have been powering on, with a gain of 26% in the last thirty days. Looking back a bit further, it's encouraging to see the stock is up 74% in the last year.

Following the firm bounce in price, given around half the companies in the United States' IT industry have price-to-sales ratios (or "P/S") below 2.3x, you may consider MongoDB as a stock to avoid entirely with its 14.9x P/S ratio. However, the P/S might be quite high for a reason and it requires further investigation to determine if it's justified.

How MongoDB Has Been Performing

Recent revenue growth for MongoDB has been in line with the industry. It might be that many expect the mediocre revenue performance to strengthen positively, which has kept the P/S ratio from falling. However, if this isn't the case, investors might get caught out paying too much for the stock.

Keen to find out how analysts think MongoDB's future stacks up against the industry? In that case, our free report is a great place to start.

Is There Enough Revenue Growth Forecasted For MongoDB?

MongoDB's P/S ratio would be typical for a company that's expected to deliver very strong growth, and importantly, perform much better than the industry.

Taking a look back first, we see that the company grew revenue by an impressive 21% last year. The latest three year period has also seen an excellent 95% overall rise in revenue, aided by its short-term performance. Accordingly, shareholders would have definitely welcomed those medium-term rates of revenue growth.

Shifting to the future, estimates from the analysts covering the company suggest revenue should grow by 18% per annum over the next three years. That's shaping up to be similar to the 18% each year growth forecast for the broader industry.

With this in consideration, we find it intriguing that MongoDB's P/S is higher than its industry peers. It seems most investors are ignoring the fairly average growth expectations and are willing to pay up for exposure to the stock. Although, additional gains will be difficult to achieve as this level of revenue growth is likely to weigh down the share price eventually.

What Does MongoDB's P/S Mean For Investors?

MongoDB's P/S has grown nicely over the last month thanks to a handy boost in the share price. Generally, our preference is to limit the use of the price-to-sales ratio to establishing what the market thinks about the overall health of a company.

Seeing as its revenues are forecast to grow in line with the wider industry, it would appear that MongoDB currently trades on a higher than expected P/S. The fact that the revenue figures aren't setting the world alight has us doubtful that the company's elevated P/S can be sustainable for the long term. Unless the company can jump ahead of the rest of the industry in the short-term, it'll be a challenge to maintain the share price at current levels.

Before you settle on your opinion, we've discovered 1 warning sign for MongoDB that you should be aware of.

Of course, profitable companies with a history of great earnings growth are generally safer bets. So you may wish to see this free collection of other companies that have reasonable P/E ratios and have grown earnings strongly.
