LivePerson, Inc. (NASDAQ:LPSN) Stock Catapults 25% Though Its Price And Business Still Lag The Industry
The LivePerson, Inc. (NASDAQ:LPSN) share price has done very well over the last month, posting an excellent gain of 25%. The last 30 days bring the annual gain to a very sharp 56%.
Even after such a large jump in price, LivePerson's price-to-sales (or "P/S") ratio of 0.3x might still make it look like a strong buy right now compared to the wider Software industry in the United States, where around half of the companies have P/S ratios above 4.9x and even P/S above 11x are quite common. Although, it's not wise to just take the P/S at face value as there may be an explanation why it's so limited.

What Does LivePerson's Recent Performance Look Like?
While the industry has experienced revenue growth lately, LivePerson's revenue has gone into reverse gear, which is not great. Perhaps the P/S remains low as investors think the prospects of strong revenue growth aren't on the horizon. If this is the case, then existing shareholders will probably struggle to get excited about the future direction of the share price.

LivePerson's P/S ratio would be typical for a company that's expected to deliver very poor growth or even falling revenue, and importantly, perform much worse than the industry.
Retrospectively, the last year delivered a frustrating 23% decrease to the company's top line. The last three years don't look nice either as the company has shrunk revenue by 41% in aggregate. Accordingly, shareholders would have felt downbeat about the medium-term rates of revenue growth.
Shifting to the future, estimates from the four analysts covering the company suggest revenue growth is heading into negative territory, declining 17% over the next year. With the industry predicted to deliver 16% growth, that's a disappointing outcome.
With this information, we are not surprised that LivePerson is trading at a P/S lower than the industry. Nonetheless, there's no guarantee the P/S has reached a floor yet with revenue going in reverse. There's potential for the P/S to fall to even lower levels if the company doesn't improve its top-line growth.
What Does LivePerson's P/S Mean For Investors?
Shares in LivePerson have risen appreciably however, its P/S is still subdued. Typically, we'd caution against reading too much into price-to-sales ratios when settling on investment decisions, though it can reveal plenty about what other market participants think about the company.
With revenue forecasts that are inferior to the rest of the industry, it's no surprise that LivePerson's P/S is on the lower end of the spectrum. As other companies in the industry are forecasting revenue growth, LivePerson's poor outlook justifies its low P/S ratio. Unless there's material change, it's hard to envision a situation where the stock price will rise drastically.
It's always necessary to consider the ever-present spectre of investment risk. We've identified 4 warning signs with LivePerson (at least 1 which is potentially serious), and understanding them should be part of your investment process.
