With a price-to-sales (or "P/S") ratio of 6.8x Intapp, Inc. (NASDAQ:INTA) may be sending very bearish signals at the moment, given that almost half of all the Software companies in the United States have P/S ratios under 4.4x and even P/S lower than 1.7x are not unusual. However, the P/S might be quite high for a reason and it requires further investigation to determine if it's justified.

What Does Intapp's Recent Performance Look Like?

Recent times have been advantageous for Intapp as its revenues have been rising faster than most other companies. It seems that many are expecting the strong revenue performance to persist, which has raised the P/S. You'd really hope so, otherwise you're paying a pretty hefty price for no particular reason.

Keen to find out how analysts think Intapp's future stacks up against the industry? In that case, our free report is a great place to start.

What Are Revenue Growth Metrics Telling Us About The High P/S?

In order to justify its P/S ratio, Intapp would need to produce outstanding growth that's well in excess of the industry.

If we review the last year of revenue growth, the company posted a terrific increase of 24%. The strong recent performance means it was also able to grow revenue by 104% in total over the last three years. Accordingly, shareholders would have definitely welcomed those medium-term rates of revenue growth.

Shifting to the future, estimates from the ten analysts covering the company suggest revenue should grow by 16% over the next year. That's shaping up to be similar to the 15% growth forecast for the broader industry.

With this information, we find it interesting that Intapp is trading at a high P/S compared to the industry. Apparently many investors in the company are more bullish than analysts indicate and aren't willing to let go of their stock right now. Although, additional gains will be difficult to achieve as this level of revenue growth is likely to weigh down the share price eventually.

The Final Word

Typically, we'd caution against reading too much into price-to-sales ratios when settling on investment decisions, though it can reveal plenty about what other market participants think about the company.

Given Intapp's future revenue forecasts are in line with the wider industry, the fact that it trades at an elevated P/S is somewhat surprising. Right now we are uncomfortable with the relatively high share price as the predicted future revenues aren't likely to support such positive sentiment for long. A positive change is needed in order to justify the current price-to-sales ratio.
