Here's Why InterDigital (NASDAQ:IDCC) Has Caught The Eye Of Investors

Investors are often guided by the idea of discovering 'the next big thing', even if that means buying 'story stocks' without any revenue, let alone profit. But as Peter Lynch said in One Up On Wall Street, 'Long shots almost never pay off.' While a well funded company may sustain losses for years, it will need to generate a profit eventually, or else investors will move on and the company will wither away.

So if this idea of high risk and high reward doesn't suit, you might be more interested in profitable, growing companies, like InterDigital (NASDAQ:IDCC). Now this is not to say that the company presents the best investment opportunity around, but profitability is a key component to success in business.

InterDigital's Improving Profits

InterDigital has undergone a massive growth in earnings per share over the last three years. So much so that this three year growth rate wouldn't be a fair assessment of the company's future. So it would be better to isolate the growth rate over the last year for our analysis. In impressive fashion, InterDigital's EPS grew from US$7.31 to US$15.14, over the previous 12 months. It's not often a company can achieve year-on-year growth of 107%. Shareholders will be hopeful that this is a sign of the company reaching an inflection point.

Top-line growth is a great indicator that growth is sustainable, and combined with a high earnings before interest and taxation (EBIT) margin, it's a great way for a company to maintain a competitive advantage in the market. The good news is that InterDigital is growing revenues, and EBIT margins improved by 21.8 percentage points to 57%, over the last year. That's great to see, on both counts.

Are InterDigital Insiders Aligned With All Shareholders?

Since InterDigital has a market capitalisation of US$5.6b, we wouldn't expect insiders to hold a large percentage of shares. But we do take comfort from the fact that they are investors in the company. We note that their impressive stake in the company is worth US$109m. Investors will appreciate management having this amount of skin in the game as it shows their commitment to the company's future.

It's good to see that insiders are invested in the company, but are remuneration levels reasonable? Our quick analysis into CEO remuneration would seem to indicate they are. Our analysis has discovered that the median total compensation for the CEOs of companies like InterDigital with market caps between US$4.0b and US$12b is about US$8.7m.

The InterDigital CEO received US$7.3m in compensation for the year ending December 2024. That comes in below the average for similar sized companies and seems pretty reasonable. While the level of CEO compensation shouldn't be the biggest factor in how the company is viewed, modest remuneration is a positive, because it suggests that the board keeps shareholder interests in mind. It can also be a sign of a culture of integrity, in a broader sense.

Is InterDigital Worth Keeping An Eye On?

InterDigital's earnings per share have been soaring, with growth rates sky high. The sweetener is that insiders have a mountain of stock, and the CEO remuneration is quite reasonable. The strong EPS improvement suggests the businesses is humming along. InterDigital is certainly doing some things right and is well worth investigating.
