GDS Holdings (NASDAQ:GDS) Shareholders Will Want The ROCE Trajectory To Continue
Did you know there are some financial metrics that can provide clues of a potential multi-bagger? Firstly, we'd want to identify a growing return on capital employed (ROCE) and then alongside that, an ever-increasing base of capital employed. Ultimately, this demonstrates that it's a business that is reinvesting profits at increasing rates of return. So when we looked at GDS Holdings (NASDAQ:GDS) and its trend of ROCE, we really liked what we saw.
Understanding Return On Capital Employed (ROCE)
For those who don't know, ROCE is a measure of a company's yearly pre-tax profit (its return), relative to the capital employed in the business. Analysts use this formula to calculate it for GDS Holdings:
Return on Capital Employed = Earnings Before Interest and Tax (EBIT) ÷ (Total Assets - Current Liabilities)
0.012 = CN¥599m ÷ (CN¥58b - CN¥7.7b) (Based on the trailing twelve months to March 2021).
Thus, GDS Holdings has an ROCE of 1.2%. In absolute terms, that's a low return and it also under-performs the IT industry average of 11%.

So How Is GDS Holdings' ROCE Trending?
Even though ROCE is still low in absolute terms, it's good to see it's heading in the right direction. Over the last five years, returns on capital employed have risen substantially to 1.2%. Basically the business is earning more per dollar of capital invested and in addition to that, 1,017% more capital is being employed now too. The increasing returns on a growing amount of capital is common amongst multi-baggers and that's why we're impressed.
