Investors in DocuSign (NASDAQ:DOCU) from five years ago are still down 60%, even after 3.4% gain this past week

Statistically speaking, long term investing is a profitable endeavour. But along the way some stocks are going to perform badly. For example the DocuSign, Inc. (NASDAQ:DOCU) share price dropped 60% over five years. We certainly feel for shareholders who bought near the top. Even worse, it's down 14% in about a month, which isn't fun at all. Importantly, this could be a market reaction to the recently released financial results. You can check out the latest numbers in our company report.

The recent uptick of 3.4% could be a positive sign of things to come, so let's take a look at historical fundamentals.

In his essay The Superinvestors of Graham-and-Doddsville Warren Buffett described how share prices do not always rationally reflect the value of a business. By comparing earnings per share (EPS) and share price changes over time, we can get a feel for how investor attitudes to a company have morphed over time.

DocuSign became profitable within the last five years. That would generally be considered a positive, so we are surprised to see the share price is down. Other metrics might give us a better handle on how its value is changing over time.

In contrast to the share price, revenue has actually increased by 18% a year in the five year period. A more detailed examination of the revenue and earnings may or may not explain why the share price languishes; there could be an opportunity.

You can see how earnings and revenue have changed over time in the image below (click on the chart to see the exact values).

A Different Perspective

It's good to see that DocuSign has rewarded shareholders with a total shareholder return of 39% in the last twelve months. There's no doubt those recent returns are much better than the TSR loss of 10% per year over five years. This makes us a little wary, but the business might have turned around its fortunes. While it is well worth considering the different impacts that market conditions can have on the share price, there are other factors that are even more important. To that end, you should be aware of the 2 warning signs we've spotted with DocuSign .
