After Leaping 27% Couchbase, Inc. (NASDAQ:BASE) Shares Are Not Flying Under The Radar

Those holding Couchbase, Inc. (NASDAQ:BASE) shares would be relieved that the share price has rebounded 27% in the last thirty days, but it needs to keep going to repair the recent damage it has caused to investor portfolios. Taking a wider view, although not as strong as the last month, the full year gain of 16% is also fairly reasonable.

Since its price has surged higher, you could be forgiven for thinking Couchbase is a stock to steer clear of with a price-to-sales ratios (or "P/S") of 4.5x, considering almost half the companies in the United States' IT industry have P/S ratios below 2.4x. Although, it's not wise to just take the P/S at face value as there may be an explanation why it's so lofty.

How Has Couchbase Performed Recently?

Couchbase certainly has been doing a good job lately as it's been growing revenue more than most other companies. The P/S is probably high because investors think this strong revenue performance will continue. You'd really hope so, otherwise you're paying a pretty hefty price for no particular reason.

Want the full picture on analyst estimates for the company? Then our free report on Couchbase will help you uncover what's on the horizon.

Do Revenue Forecasts Match The High P/S Ratio?

In order to justify its P/S ratio, Couchbase would need to produce outstanding growth that's well in excess of the industry.

If we review the last year of revenue growth, the company posted a terrific increase of 21%. The strong recent performance means it was also able to grow revenue by 76% in total over the last three years. Therefore, it's fair to say the revenue growth recently has been superb for the company.

Shifting to the future, estimates from the analysts covering the company suggest revenue should grow by 17% each year over the next three years. Meanwhile, the rest of the industry is forecast to only expand by 11% per year, which is noticeably less attractive.

With this in mind, it's not hard to understand why Couchbase's P/S is high relative to its industry peers. It seems most investors are expecting this strong future growth and are willing to pay more for the stock.

The Key Takeaway

Shares in Couchbase have seen a strong upwards swing lately, which has really helped boost its P/S figure. Using the price-to-sales ratio alone to determine if you should sell your stock isn't sensible, however it can be a practical guide to the company's future prospects.

Our look into Couchbase shows that its P/S ratio remains high on the merit of its strong future revenues. Right now shareholders are comfortable with the P/S as they are quite confident future revenues aren't under threat. It's hard to see the share price falling strongly in the near future under these circumstances.
