Digital Turbine, Inc. (NASDAQ:APPS) Held Back By Insufficient Growth Even After Shares Climb 25%

Digital Turbine, Inc. (NASDAQ:APPS) shares have continued their recent momentum with a 25% gain in the last month alone. Unfortunately, the gains of the last month did little to right the losses of the last year with the stock still down 50% over that time.

In spite of the firm bounce in price, Digital Turbine may still look like a strong buying opportunity at present with its price-to-sales (or "P/S") ratio of 0.5x, considering almost half of all companies in the Software industry in the United States have P/S ratios greater than 5.9x and even P/S higher than 13x aren't out of the ordinary. Nonetheless, we'd need to dig a little deeper to determine if there is a rational basis for the highly reduced P/S.

What Does Digital Turbine's P/S Mean For Shareholders?

Digital Turbine hasn't been tracking well recently as its declining revenue compares poorly to other companies, which have seen some growth in their revenues on average. Perhaps the P/S remains low as investors think the prospects of strong revenue growth aren't on the horizon. So while you could say the stock is cheap, investors will be looking for improvement before they see it as good value.

Is There Any Revenue Growth Forecasted For Digital Turbine?

In order to justify its P/S ratio, Digital Turbine would need to produce anemic growth that's substantially trailing the industry.

In reviewing the last year of financials, we were disheartened to see the company's revenues fell to the tune of 17%. This means it has also seen a slide in revenue over the longer-term as revenue is down 7.3% in total over the last three years. So unfortunately, we have to acknowledge that the company has not done a great job of growing revenue over that time.

Looking ahead now, revenue is anticipated to climb by 1.5% during the coming year according to the three analysts following the company. Meanwhile, the rest of the industry is forecast to expand by 25%, which is noticeably more attractive.

With this in consideration, its clear as to why Digital Turbine's P/S is falling short industry peers. Apparently many shareholders weren't comfortable holding on while the company is potentially eyeing a less prosperous future.

The Key Takeaway

Shares in Digital Turbine have risen appreciably however, its P/S is still subdued. Generally, our preference is to limit the use of the price-to-sales ratio to establishing what the market thinks about the overall health of a company.

We've established that Digital Turbine maintains its low P/S on the weakness of its forecast growth being lower than the wider industry, as expected. At this stage investors feel the potential for an improvement in revenue isn't great enough to justify a higher P/S ratio. The company will need a change of fortune to justify the P/S rising higher in the future.
