Investors can buy low cost index fund if they want to receive the average market return. But across the board there are plenty of stocks that underperform the market. For example, the Akamai Technologies, Inc. (NASDAQ:AKAM) share price return of 37% over three years lags the market return in the same period. In the last year the stock price gained, albeit only 3.7%.

While markets are a powerful pricing mechanism, share prices reflect investor sentiment, not just underlying business performance. By comparing earnings per share (EPS) and share price changes over time, we can get a feel for how investor attitudes to a company have morphed over time.

Over the last three years, Akamai Technologies failed to grow earnings per share, which fell 0.3% (annualized). Companies are not always focussed on EPS growth in the short term, and looking at how the share price has reacted, we don't think EPS is the most important metric for Akamai Technologies at the moment. Since the change in EPS doesn't seem to correlate with the change in share price, it's worth taking a look at other metrics.

It may well be that Akamai Technologies revenue growth rate of 7.1% over three years has convinced shareholders to believe in a brighter future. If the company is being managed for the long term good, today's shareholders might be right to hold on.

A Different Perspective

Akamai Technologies shareholders gained a total return of 3.7% during the year. But that was short of the market average. On the bright side, the longer term returns (running at about 6.0% a year, over half a decade) look better. Maybe the share price is just taking a breather while the business executes on its growth strategy.
