Xiao-I Corporation (NASDAQ:AIXI) shareholders that were waiting for something to happen have been dealt a blow with a 31% share price drop in the last month. For any long-term shareholders, the last month ends a year to forget by locking in a 77% share price decline.

After such a large drop in price, Xiao-I may be sending very bullish signals at the moment with its price-to-sales (or "P/S") ratio of 1.5x, since almost half of all companies in the Software industry in the United States have P/S ratios greater than 4.3x and even P/S higher than 11x are not unusual. However, the P/S might be quite low for a reason and it requires further investigation to determine if it's justified.

How Xiao-I Has Been Performing

With revenue growth that's superior to most other companies of late, Xiao-I has been doing relatively well. Perhaps the market is expecting future revenue performance to dive, which has kept the P/S suppressed. If not, then existing shareholders have reason to be quite optimistic about the future direction of the share price.

Do Revenue Forecasts Match The Low P/S Ratio?

The only time you'd be truly comfortable seeing a P/S as depressed as Xiao-I's is when the company's growth is on track to lag the industry decidedly.

Retrospectively, the last year delivered an exceptional 23% gain to the company's top line. Spectacularly, three year revenue growth has ballooned by several orders of magnitude, thanks in part to the last 12 months of revenue growth. So we can start by confirming that the company has done a tremendous job of growing revenue over that time.

Turning to the outlook, the next year should generate growth of 18% as estimated by the one analyst watching the company. Meanwhile, the rest of the industry is forecast to only expand by 15%, which is noticeably less attractive.

With this information, we find it odd that Xiao-I is trading at a P/S lower than the industry. It looks like most investors are not convinced at all that the company can achieve future growth expectations.

The Bottom Line On Xiao-I's P/S

Having almost fallen off a cliff, Xiao-I's share price has pulled its P/S way down as well. Using the price-to-sales ratio alone to determine if you should sell your stock isn't sensible, however it can be a practical guide to the company's future prospects.

Xiao-I's analyst forecasts revealed that its superior revenue outlook isn't contributing to its P/S anywhere near as much as we would have predicted. There could be some major risk factors that are placing downward pressure on the P/S ratio. While the possibility of the share price plunging seems unlikely due to the high growth forecasted for the company, the market does appear to have some hesitation.
