Some Confidence Is Lacking In Arteris, Inc. (NASDAQ:AIP) As Shares Slide 26%

Arteris, Inc. (NASDAQ:AIP) shares have retraced a considerable 26% in the last month, reversing a fair amount of their solid recent performance. Still, a bad month hasn't completely ruined the past year with the stock gaining 35%, which is great even in a bull market.

Even after such a large drop in price, Arteris may still be sending sell signals at present with a price-to-sales (or "P/S") ratio of 6.3x, when you consider almost half of the companies in the Software industry in the United States have P/S ratios under 5.2x and even P/S lower than 2x aren't out of the ordinary. Nonetheless, we'd need to dig a little deeper to determine if there is a rational basis for the elevated P/S.

How Has Arteris Performed Recently?

Arteris could be doing better as it's been growing revenue less than most other companies lately. One possibility is that the P/S ratio is high because investors think this lacklustre revenue performance will improve markedly. If not, then existing shareholders may be very nervous about the viability of the share price.

If you'd like to see what analysts are forecasting going forward, you should check out our free report on Arteris.

What Are Revenue Growth Metrics Telling Us About The High P/S?

The only time you'd be truly comfortable seeing a P/S as high as Arteris' is when the company's growth is on track to outshine the industry.

If we review the last year of revenue growth, the company posted a worthy increase of 7.6%. The latest three year period has also seen an excellent 52% overall rise in revenue, aided somewhat by its short-term performance. So we can start by confirming that the company has done a great job of growing revenues over that time.

Shifting to the future, estimates from the five analysts covering the company suggest revenue should grow by 20% each year over the next three years. With the industry predicted to deliver 20% growth each year, the company is positioned for a comparable revenue result.

With this in consideration, we find it intriguing that Arteris' P/S is higher than its industry peers. Apparently many investors in the company are more bullish than analysts indicate and aren't willing to let go of their stock right now. Although, additional gains will be difficult to achieve as this level of revenue growth is likely to weigh down the share price eventually.

What Does Arteris' P/S Mean For Investors?

Arteris' P/S remain high even after its stock plunged. Generally, our preference is to limit the use of the price-to-sales ratio to establishing what the market thinks about the overall health of a company.

Seeing as its revenues are forecast to grow in line with the wider industry, it would appear that Arteris currently trades on a higher than expected P/S. When we see revenue growth that just matches the industry, we don't expect elevates P/S figures to remain inflated for the long-term. Unless the company can jump ahead of the rest of the industry in the short-term, it'll be a challenge to maintain the share price at current levels.
