A Closer Look At QuickLogic's Earnings
Many investors haven't heard of the accrual ratio from cashflow, but it is actually a useful measure of how well a company's profit is backed up by free cash flow (FCF) during a given period. The accrual ratio subtracts the FCF from the profit for a given period, and divides the result by the average operating assets of the company over that time. You could think of the accrual ratio from cashflow as the 'non-FCF profit ratio'.
As a result, a negative accrual ratio is a positive for the company, and a positive accrual ratio is a negative. That is not intended to imply we should worry about a positive accrual ratio, but it's worth noting where the accrual ratio is rather high. Notably, there is some academic evidence that suggests that a high accrual ratio is a bad sign for near-term profits, generally speaking.
For the year to June 2024, QuickLogic had an accrual ratio of 0.53. As a general rule, that bodes poorly for future profitability. To wit, the company did not generate one whit of free cashflow in that time. Even though it reported a profit of US$1.79m, a look at free cash flow indicates it actually burnt through US$5.2m in the last year. We also note that QuickLogic's free cash flow was actually negative last year as well, so we could understand if shareholders were bothered by its outflow of US$5.2m. The good news for shareholders is that QuickLogic's accrual ratio was much better last year, so this year's poor reading might simply be a case of a short term mismatch between profit and FCF. As a result, some shareholders may be looking for stronger cash conversion in the current year.

Our Take On QuickLogic's Profit Performance
As we discussed above, we think QuickLogic's earnings were not supported by free cash flow, which might concern some investors. As a result, we think it may well be the case that QuickLogic's underlying earnings power is lower than its statutory profit. On the bright side, the company showed enough improvement to book a profit this year, after losing money last year. The goal of this article has been to assess how well we can rely on the statutory earnings to reflect the company's potential, but there is plenty more to consider. So while earnings quality is important, it's equally important to consider the risks facing QuickLogic at this point in time. Every company has risks, and we've spotted 2 warning signs for QuickLogic (of which 1 is concerning!) you should know about.
