Investors are often guided by the idea of discovering 'the next big thing', even if that means buying 'story stocks' without any revenue, let alone profit. But as Peter Lynch said in One Up On Wall Street, 'Long shots almost never pay off.' Loss-making companies are always racing against time to reach financial sustainability, so investors in these companies may be taking on more risk than they should.

If this kind of company isn't your style, you like companies that generate revenue, and even earn profits, then you may well be interested in ON Semiconductor (NASDAQ:ON). While profit isn't the sole metric that should be considered when investing, it's worth recognising businesses that can consistently produce it.

ON Semiconductor's Improving Profits

In the last three years ON Semiconductor's earnings per share took off; so much so that it's a bit disingenuous to use these figures to try and deduce long term estimates. As a result, we'll zoom in on growth over the last year, instead. To the delight of shareholders, ON Semiconductor's EPS soared from US$3.36 to US$4.25, over the last year. That's a commendable gain of 27%.

Top-line growth is a great indicator that growth is sustainable, and combined with a high earnings before interest and taxation (EBIT) margin, it's a great way for a company to maintain a competitive advantage in the market. ON Semiconductor shareholders can take confidence from the fact that EBIT margins are up from 26% to 33%, and revenue is growing. That's great to see, on both counts.

Are ON Semiconductor Insiders Aligned With All Shareholders?

Owing to the size of ON Semiconductor, we wouldn't expect insiders to hold a significant proportion of the company. But we do take comfort from the fact that they are investors in the company. We note that their impressive stake in the company is worth US$123m. While that is a lot of skin in the game, we note this holding only totals to 0.3% of the business, which is a result of the company being so large. This still shows shareholders there is a degree of alignment between management and themselves.

Is ON Semiconductor Worth Keeping An Eye On?

You can't deny that ON Semiconductor has grown its earnings per share at a very impressive rate. That's attractive. Further, the high level of insider ownership is impressive and suggests that the management appreciates the EPS growth and has faith in ON Semiconductor's continuing strength. Fast growth and confident insiders should be enough to warrant further research, so it would seem that it's a good stock to follow. Don't forget that there may still be risks.
