Not Many Are Piling Into Nano Labs Ltd (NASDAQ:NA) Stock Yet As It Plummets 64%

Nano Labs Ltd (NASDAQ:NA) shares have had a horrible month, losing 64% after a relatively good period beforehand. To make matters worse, the recent drop has wiped out a year's worth of gains with the share price now back where it started a year ago.

In spite of the heavy fall in price, there still wouldn't be many who think Nano Labs' price-to-sales (or "P/S") ratio of 3.9x is worth a mention when the median P/S in the United States' Semiconductor industry is similar at about 4.4x. While this might not raise any eyebrows, if the P/S ratio is not justified investors could be missing out on a potential opportunity or ignoring looming disappointment.

How Has Nano Labs Performed Recently?

As an illustration, revenue has deteriorated at Nano Labs over the last year, which is not ideal at all. It might be that many expect the company to put the disappointing revenue performance behind them over the coming period, which has kept the P/S from falling. If not, then existing shareholders may be a little nervous about the viability of the share price.

How Is Nano Labs' Revenue Growth Trending?

Nano Labs' P/S ratio would be typical for a company that's only expected to deliver moderate growth, and importantly, perform in line with the industry.

Retrospectively, the last year delivered a frustrating 92% decrease to the company's top line. The latest three year period has seen an incredible overall rise in revenue, a stark contrast to the last 12 months. Therefore, it's fair to say the revenue growth recently has been superb for the company, but investors will want to ask why it is now in decline.

When compared to the industry's one-year growth forecast of 46%, the most recent medium-term revenue trajectory is noticeably more alluring

With this information, we find it interesting that Nano Labs is trading at a fairly similar P/S compared to the industry. It may be that most investors are not convinced the company can maintain its recent growth rates.

What We Can Learn From Nano Labs' P/S?

Nano Labs' plummeting stock price has brought its P/S back to a similar region as the rest of the industry. We'd say the price-to-sales ratio's power isn't primarily as a valuation instrument but rather to gauge current investor sentiment and future expectations.

We didn't quite envision Nano Labs' P/S sitting in line with the wider industry, considering the revenue growth over the last three-year is higher than the current industry outlook. It'd be fair to assume that potential risks the company faces could be the contributing factor to the lower than expected P/S. At least the risk of a price drop looks to be subdued if recent medium-term revenue trends continue, but investors seem to think future revenue could see some volatility.
