Genesco Inc.'s (NYSE:GCO) 30% Price Boost Is Out Of Tune With Revenues
Despite an already strong run, Genesco Inc. (NYSE:GCO) shares have been powering on, with a gain of 30% in the last thirty days. Unfortunately, despite the strong performance over the last month, the full year gain of 4.8% isn't as attractive.
Even after such a large jump in price, it's still not a stretch to say that Genesco's price-to-sales (or "P/S") ratio of 0.1x right now seems quite "middle-of-the-road" compared to the Specialty Retail industry in the United States, where the median P/S ratio is around 0.4x. While this might not raise any eyebrows, if the P/S ratio is not justified investors could be missing out on a potential opportunity or ignoring looming disappointment.

How Has Genesco Performed Recently?
Recent times haven't been great for Genesco as its revenue has been rising slower than most other companies. One possibility is that the P/S ratio is moderate because investors think this lacklustre revenue performance will turn around. However, if this isn't the case, investors might get caught out paying too much for the stock.

In order to justify its P/S ratio, Genesco would need to produce growth that's similar to the industry.
Taking a look back first, we see that there was hardly any revenue growth to speak of for the company over the past year. This isn't what shareholders were looking for as it means they've been left with a 2.6% decline in revenue over the last three years in total. Therefore, it's fair to say the revenue growth recently has been undesirable for the company.
Looking ahead now, revenue is anticipated to climb by 1.5% during the coming year according to the three analysts following the company. Meanwhile, the rest of the industry is forecast to expand by 5.9%, which is noticeably more attractive.
With this information, we find it interesting that Genesco is trading at a fairly similar P/S compared to the industry. It seems most investors are ignoring the fairly limited growth expectations and are willing to pay up for exposure to the stock. These shareholders may be setting themselves up for future disappointment if the P/S falls to levels more in line with the growth outlook.
The Bottom Line On Genesco's P/S
Genesco appears to be back in favour with a solid price jump bringing its P/S back in line with other companies in the industry Generally, our preference is to limit the use of the price-to-sales ratio to establishing what the market thinks about the overall health of a company.
Given that Genesco's revenue growth projections are relatively subdued in comparison to the wider industry, it comes as a surprise to see it trading at its current P/S ratio. At present, we aren't confident in the P/S as the predicted future revenues aren't likely to support a more positive sentiment for long. Circumstances like this present a risk to current and prospective investors who may see share prices fall if the low revenue growth impacts the sentiment.
