Revenues Not Telling The Story For Chewy, Inc. (NYSE:CHWY) After Shares Rise 28%

Published
NYSE:CHWY

The Chewy, Inc. (NYSE:CHWY) share price has done very well over the last month, posting an excellent gain of 28%. Taking a wider view, although not as strong as the last month, the full year gain of 16% is also fairly reasonable.

Since its price has surged higher, you could be forgiven for thinking Chewy is a stock not worth researching with a price-to-sales ratios (or "P/S") of 1.1x, considering almost half the companies in the United States' Specialty Retail industry have P/S ratios below 0.4x. Although, it's not wise to just take the P/S at face value as there may be an explanation why it's as high as it is.

What Does Chewy's Recent Performance Look Like?

Recent revenue growth for Chewy has been in line with the industry. It might be that many expect the mediocre revenue performance to strengthen positively, which has kept the P/S ratio from falling. If not, then existing shareholders may be a little nervous about the viability of the share price.

Keen to find out how analysts think Chewy's future stacks up against the industry? In that case, our free report is a great place to start.

Do Revenue Forecasts Match The High P/S Ratio?

Chewy's P/S ratio would be typical for a company that's expected to deliver solid growth, and importantly, perform better than the industry.

Taking a look back first, we see that the company managed to grow revenues by a handy 4.4% last year. The latest three year period has also seen an excellent 39% overall rise in revenue, aided somewhat by its short-term performance. Accordingly, shareholders would have definitely welcomed those medium-term rates of revenue growth.

Turning to the outlook, the next three years should generate growth of 6.7% per annum as estimated by the analysts watching the company. With the industry predicted to deliver 5.7% growth per annum, the company is positioned for a comparable revenue result.

With this in consideration, we find it intriguing that Chewy's P/S is higher than its industry peers. Apparently many investors in the company are more bullish than analysts indicate and aren't willing to let go of their stock right now. Although, additional gains will be difficult to achieve as this level of revenue growth is likely to weigh down the share price eventually.

The Final Word

The large bounce in Chewy's shares has lifted the company's P/S handsomely. We'd say the price-to-sales ratio's power isn't primarily as a valuation instrument but rather to gauge current investor sentiment and future expectations.

Seeing as its revenues are forecast to grow in line with the wider industry, it would appear that Chewy currently trades on a higher than expected P/S. Right now we are uncomfortable with the relatively high share price as the predicted future revenues aren't likely to support such positive sentiment for long. Unless the company can jump ahead of the rest of the industry in the short-term, it'll be a challenge to maintain the share price at current levels.
