The Returns On Capital At Yoshitsu (NASDAQ:TKLF) Don't Inspire Confidence
If you're not sure where to start when looking for the next multi-bagger, there are a few key trends you should keep an eye out for. Ideally, a business will show two trends; firstly a growing return on capital employed (ROCE) and secondly, an increasing amount of capital employed. Basically this means that a company has profitable initiatives that it can continue to reinvest in, which is a trait of a compounding machine. Although, when we looked at Yoshitsu (NASDAQ:TKLF), it didn't seem to tick all of these boxes.
What Is Return On Capital Employed (ROCE)?
If you haven't worked with ROCE before, it measures the 'return' (pre-tax profit) a company generates from capital employed in its business. The formula for this calculation on Yoshitsu is:
Return on Capital Employed = Earnings Before Interest and Tax (EBIT) ÷ (Total Assets - Current Liabilities)
0.11 = US$5.1m ÷ (US$142m - US$93m) (Based on the trailing twelve months to March 2024).
Therefore, Yoshitsu has an ROCE of 11%. That's a relatively normal return on capital, and it's around the 12% generated by the Specialty Retail industry.

What The Trend Of ROCE Can Tell Us
The trend of ROCE doesn't look fantastic because it's fallen from 39% five years ago, while the business's capital employed increased by 159%. However, some of the increase in capital employed could be attributed to the recent capital raising that's been completed prior to their latest reporting period, so keep that in mind when looking at the ROCE decrease. The funds raised likely haven't been put to work yet so it's worth watching what happens in the future with Yoshitsu's earnings and if they change as a result from the capital raise.
Another thing to note, Yoshitsu has a high ratio of current liabilities to total assets of 66%. This effectively means that suppliers (or short-term creditors) are funding a large portion of the business, so just be aware that this can introduce some elements of risk. While it's not necessarily a bad thing, it can be beneficial if this ratio is lower.
The Bottom Line On Yoshitsu's ROCE
Even though returns on capital have fallen in the short term, we find it promising that revenue and capital employed have both increased for Yoshitsu. These growth trends haven't led to growth returns though, since the stock has fallen 33% over the last year. As a result, we'd recommend researching this stock further to uncover what other fundamentals of the business can show us.
