After Leaping 48% The RealReal, Inc. (NASDAQ:REAL) Shares Are Not Flying Under The Radar
Those holding The RealReal, Inc. (NASDAQ:REAL) shares would be relieved that the share price has rebounded 48% in the last thirty days, but it needs to keep going to repair the recent damage it has caused to investor portfolios. The last 30 days bring the annual gain to a very sharp 73%.
Following the firm bounce in price, you could be forgiven for thinking RealReal is a stock not worth researching with a price-to-sales ratios (or "P/S") of 1.4x, considering almost half the companies in the United States' Specialty Retail industry have P/S ratios below 0.4x. However, the P/S might be high for a reason and it requires further investigation to determine if it's justified.

How Has RealReal Performed Recently?
With revenue growth that's superior to most other companies of late, RealReal has been doing relatively well. It seems that many are expecting the strong revenue performance to persist, which has raised the P/S. However, if this isn't the case, investors might get caught out paying too much for the stock.

There's an inherent assumption that a company should outperform the industry for P/S ratios like RealReal's to be considered reasonable.
Retrospectively, the last year delivered a decent 9.3% gain to the company's revenues. The solid recent performance means it was also able to grow revenue by 28% in total over the last three years. Therefore, it's fair to say the revenue growth recently has been respectable for the company.
Looking ahead now, revenue is anticipated to climb by 9.4% per annum during the coming three years according to the eight analysts following the company. With the industry only predicted to deliver 5.8% per year, the company is positioned for a stronger revenue result.
With this information, we can see why RealReal is trading at such a high P/S compared to the industry. Apparently shareholders aren't keen to offload something that is potentially eyeing a more prosperous future.
What Does RealReal's P/S Mean For Investors?
The large bounce in RealReal's shares has lifted the company's P/S handsomely. While the price-to-sales ratio shouldn't be the defining factor in whether you buy a stock or not, it's quite a capable barometer of revenue expectations.
As we suspected, our examination of RealReal's analyst forecasts revealed that its superior revenue outlook is contributing to its high P/S. Right now shareholders are comfortable with the P/S as they are quite confident future revenues aren't under threat. Unless these conditions change, they will continue to provide strong support to the share price.
