Liquidity Services (NASDAQ:LQDT) Is In A Good Position To Deliver On Growth Plans
Just because a business does not make any money, does not mean that the stock will go down. For example, biotech and mining exploration companies often lose money for years before finding success with a new treatment or mineral discovery. But while history lauds those rare successes, those that fail are often forgotten; who remembers Pets.com?
Given this risk, we thought we'd take a look at whether Liquidity Services (NASDAQ:LQDT) shareholders should be worried about its cash burn. In this report, we will consider the company's annual negative free cash flow, henceforth referring to it as the 'cash burn'. The first step is to compare its cash burn with its cash reserves, to give us its 'cash runway'.

Does Liquidity Services Have A Long Cash Runway?
A company's cash runway is calculated by dividing its cash hoard by its cash burn. When Liquidity Services last reported its balance sheet in September 2019, it had zero debt and cash worth US$66m. In the last year, its cash burn was US$12m. Therefore, from September 2019 it had 5.4 years of cash runway. Even though this is but one measure of the company's cash burn, the thought of such a long cash runway warms our bellies in a comforting way. The image below shows how its cash balance has been changing over the last few years.
How Well Is Liquidity Services Growing?
One thing for shareholders to keep front in mind is that Liquidity Services increased its cash burn by 240% in the last twelve months. That's not ideal, but we're made even more nervous given that operating revenue was flat over the same period. Considering these two factors together makes us nervous about the direction the company seems to be heading. Clearly, however, the crucial factor is whether the company will grow its business going forward. For that reason, it makes a lot of sense to take a look at our analyst forecasts for the company.
How Easily Can Liquidity Services Raise Cash?
While Liquidity Services seems to be in a fairly good position, it's still worth considering how easily it could raise more cash, even just to fuel faster growth. Issuing new shares, or taking on debt, are the most common ways for a listed company to raise more money for its business. One of the main advantages held by publicly listed companies is that they can sell shares to investors to raise cash to fund growth. We can compare a company's cash burn to its market capitalisation to get a sense for how many new shares a company would have to issue to fund one year's operations.
Since it has a market capitalisation of US$191m, Liquidity Services's US$12m in cash burn equates to about 6.4% of its market value. Given that is a rather small percentage, it would probably be really easy for the company to fund another year's growth by issuing some new shares to investors, or even by taking out a loan.
So, Should We Worry About Liquidity Services's Cash Burn?
On this analysis of Liquidity Services's cash burn, we think its cash runway was reassuring, while its increasing cash burn has us a bit worried.
