AbbVie (NYSE:ABBV) Has Announced That It Will Be Increasing Its Dividend To $1.55
AbbVie Inc. (NYSE:ABBV) will increase its dividend from last year's comparable payment on the 15th of February to $1.55. This takes the dividend yield to 4.5%, which shareholders will be pleased with.

AbbVie's Payment Has Solid Earnings Coverage
A big dividend yield for a few years doesn't mean much if it can't be sustained. Prior to this announcement, the company was paying out 162% of what it was earning, however the dividend was quite comfortably covered by free cash flows at a cash payout ratio of only 44%. Given that the dividend is a cash outflow, we think that cash is more important than accounting measures of profit when assessing the dividend, so this is a mitigating factor.
Over the next year, EPS is forecast to expand by 119.4%. If recent patterns in the dividend continues, the payout ratio in 12 months could be 86% which is a bit high but can definitely be sustainable.
AbbVie Has A Solid Track Record
The company has a sustained record of paying dividends with very little fluctuation. Since 2013, the dividend has gone from $1.60 total annually to $6.20. This works out to be a compound annual growth rate (CAGR) of approximately 15% a year over that time. So, dividends have been growing pretty quickly, and even more impressively, they haven't experienced any notable falls during this period.
Dividend Growth May Be Hard To Come By
Investors could be attracted to the stock based on the quality of its payment history. Unfortunately things aren't as good as they seem. Over the past five years, it looks as though AbbVie's EPS has declined at around 5.3% a year. If earnings continue declining, the company may have to make the difficult choice of reducing the dividend or even stopping it completely - the opposite of dividend growth. Earnings are predicted to grow over the next year, but we would remain cautious until a track record of earnings growth is established.
Our Thoughts On AbbVie's Dividend
In summary, while it's always good to see the dividend being raised, we don't think AbbVie's payments are rock solid. The company is generating plenty of cash, but we still think the dividend is a bit high for comfort. We would be a touch cautious of relying on this stock primarily for the dividend income.
Market movements attest to how highly valued a consistent dividend policy is compared to one which is more unpredictable.
