Will Weakness in Agilent Technologies, Inc.'s (NYSE:A) Stock Prove Temporary Given Strong Fundamentals?
With its stock down 11% over the past three months, it is easy to disregard Agilent Technologies (NYSE:A). However, stock prices are usually driven by a company’s financial performance over the long term, which in this case looks quite promising. In this article, we decided to focus on Agilent Technologies' ROE.
ROE or return on equity is a useful tool to assess how effectively a company can generate returns on the investment it received from its shareholders. In other words, it is a profitability ratio which measures the rate of return on the capital provided by the company's shareholders.
How Is ROE Calculated?
Return on equity can be calculated by using the formula:
Return on Equity = Net Profit (from continuing operations) ÷ Shareholders' Equity
So, based on the above formula, the ROE for Agilent Technologies is:
21% = US$1.3b ÷ US$6.0b (Based on the trailing twelve months to January 2025).
The 'return' is the yearly profit. One way to conceptualize this is that for each $1 of shareholders' capital it has, the company made $0.21 in profit.

What Has ROE Got To Do With Earnings Growth?
We have already established that ROE serves as an efficient profit-generating gauge for a company's future earnings. Based on how much of its profits the company chooses to reinvest or "retain", we are then able to evaluate a company's future ability to generate profits. Assuming all else is equal, companies that have both a higher return on equity and higher profit retention are usually the ones that have a higher growth rate when compared to companies that don't have the same features.
Agilent Technologies' Earnings Growth And 21% ROE
To start with, Agilent Technologies' ROE looks acceptable. Further, the company's ROE compares quite favorably to the industry average of 11%. Probably as a result of this, Agilent Technologies was able to see a decent growth of 12% over the last five years.
As a next step, we compared Agilent Technologies' net income growth with the industry, and pleasingly, we found that the growth seen by the company is higher than the average industry growth of 5.5%.
Earnings growth is an important metric to consider when valuing a stock. The investor should try to establish if the expected growth or decline in earnings, whichever the case may be, is priced in. This then helps them determine if the stock is placed for a bright or bleak future. What is A worth today? Is Agilent Technologies Making Efficient Use Of Its Profits?
In Agilent Technologies' case, its respectable earnings growth can probably be explained by its low three-year median payout ratio of 20% (or a retention ratio of 80%), which suggests that the company is investing most of its profits to grow its business.
Additionally, Agilent Technologies has paid dividends over a period of at least ten years which means that the company is pretty serious about sharing its profits with shareholders. Based on the latest analysts' estimates, we found that the company's future payout ratio over the next three years is expected to hold steady at 17%. As a result, Agilent Technologies' ROE is not expected to change by much either, which we inferred from the analyst estimate of 23% for future ROE.
Conclusion
In total, we are pretty happy with Agilent Technologies' performance. Particularly, we like that the company is reinvesting heavily into its business, and at a high rate of return. Unsurprisingly, this has led to an impressive earnings growth. Having said that, the company's earnings growth is expected to slow down, as forecasted in the current analyst estimates.
