The 10x Genomics, Inc. (NASDAQ:TXG) share price has done very well over the last month, posting an excellent gain of 31%. The last 30 days bring the annual gain to a very sharp 54%.

After such a large jump in price, when almost half of the companies in the United States' Life Sciences industry have price-to-sales ratios (or "P/S") below 3.8x, you may consider 10x Genomics as a stock not worth researching with its 11.3x P/S ratio. Although, it's not wise to just take the P/S at face value as there may be an explanation why it's so lofty.

How Is 10x Genomics' Revenue Growth Trending?

10x Genomics' P/S ratio would be typical for a company that's expected to deliver very strong growth, and importantly, perform much better than the industry.

Taking a look back first, we see that the company grew revenue by an impressive 17% last year. Pleasingly, revenue has also lifted 126% in aggregate from three years ago, thanks to the last 12 months of growth. Therefore, it's fair to say the revenue growth recently has been superb for the company.

Looking ahead now, revenue is anticipated to climb by 15% each year during the coming three years according to the analysts following the company. With the industry only predicted to deliver 4.7% per annum, the company is positioned for a stronger revenue result.

With this information, we can see why 10x Genomics is trading at such a high P/S compared to the industry. It seems most investors are expecting this strong future growth and are willing to pay more for the stock.

What We Can Learn From 10x Genomics' P/S?

10x Genomics' P/S has grown nicely over the last month thanks to a handy boost in the share price. Typically, we'd caution against reading too much into price-to-sales ratios when settling on investment decisions, though it can reveal plenty about what other market participants think about the company.

As we suspected, our examination of 10x Genomics' analyst forecasts revealed that its superior revenue outlook is contributing to its high P/S. At this stage investors feel the potential for a deterioration in revenues is quite remote, justifying the elevated P/S ratio.
