Spero Therapeutics, Inc. (NASDAQ:SPRO) Looks Inexpensive After Falling 27% But Perhaps Not Attractive Enough

To the annoyance of some shareholders, Spero Therapeutics, Inc. (NASDAQ:SPRO) shares are down a considerable 27% in the last month, which continues a horrid run for the company. Instead of being rewarded, shareholders who have already held through the last twelve months are now sitting on a 44% share price drop.

After such a large drop in price, Spero Therapeutics may be sending very bullish signals at the moment with its price-to-sales (or "P/S") ratio of 0.4x, since almost half of all companies in the Biotechs industry in the United States have P/S ratios greater than 10.7x and even P/S higher than 60x are not unusual. Nonetheless, we'd need to dig a little deeper to determine if there is a rational basis for the highly reduced P/S.

What Does Spero Therapeutics' P/S Mean For Shareholders?

Spero Therapeutics could be doing better as it's been growing revenue less than most other companies lately. It seems that many are expecting the uninspiring revenue performance to persist, which has repressed the growth of the P/S ratio. If you still like the company, you'd be hoping revenue doesn't get any worse and that you could pick up some stock while it's out of favour.

How Is Spero Therapeutics' Revenue Growth Trending?

Spero Therapeutics' P/S ratio would be typical for a company that's expected to deliver very poor growth or even falling revenue, and importantly, perform much worse than the industry.

Retrospectively, the last year delivered an exceptional 37% gain to the company's top line. This great performance means it was also able to deliver immense revenue growth over the last three years. So we can start by confirming that the company has done a tremendous job of growing revenue over that time.

Turning to the outlook, the next three years should bring diminished returns, with revenue decreasing 39% each year as estimated by the dual analysts watching the company. That's not great when the rest of the industry is expected to grow by 127% per annum.

In light of this, it's understandable that Spero Therapeutics' P/S would sit below the majority of other companies. Nonetheless, there's no guarantee the P/S has reached a floor yet with revenue going in reverse. There's potential for the P/S to fall to even lower levels if the company doesn't improve its top-line growth.

What We Can Learn From Spero Therapeutics' P/S?

Having almost fallen off a cliff, Spero Therapeutics' share price has pulled its P/S way down as well. Using the price-to-sales ratio alone to determine if you should sell your stock isn't sensible, however it can be a practical guide to the company's future prospects.

With revenue forecasts that are inferior to the rest of the industry, it's no surprise that Spero Therapeutics' P/S is on the lower end of the spectrum. At this stage investors feel the potential for an improvement in revenue isn't great enough to justify a higher P/S ratio. It's hard to see the share price rising strongly in the near future under these circumstances.
