SomaLogic, Inc. (NASDAQ:SLGC) Stocks Shoot Up 33% But Its P/S Still Looks Reasonable
SomaLogic, Inc. (NASDAQ:SLGC) shareholders are no doubt pleased to see that the share price has bounced 33% in the last month, although it is still struggling to make up recently lost ground. But the last month did very little to improve the 54% share price decline over the last year.
Following the firm bounce in price, SomaLogic may be sending bearish signals at the moment with its price-to-sales (or "P/S") ratio of 5.7x, since almost half of all companies in the Life Sciences in the United States have P/S ratios under 4.5x and even P/S lower than 1.9x are not unusual. Nonetheless, we'd need to dig a little deeper to determine if there is a rational basis for the elevated P/S.

What Does SomaLogic's Recent Performance Look Like?
With revenue growth that's superior to most other companies of late, SomaLogic has been doing relatively well. It seems that many are expecting the strong revenue performance to persist, which has raised the P/S. If not, then existing shareholders might be a little nervous about the viability of the share price.

In order to justify its P/S ratio, SomaLogic would need to produce impressive growth in excess of the industry.
Taking a look back first, we see that the company grew revenue by an impressive 20% last year. Pleasingly, revenue has also lifted 203% in aggregate from three years ago, thanks to the last 12 months of growth. Accordingly, shareholders would have definitely welcomed those medium-term rates of revenue growth.
Turning to the outlook, the next three years should generate growth of 11% per year as estimated by the four analysts watching the company. With the industry only predicted to deliver 6.9% per annum, the company is positioned for a stronger revenue result.
With this information, we can see why SomaLogic is trading at such a high P/S compared to the industry. It seems most investors are expecting this strong future growth and are willing to pay more for the stock.
The Key Takeaway
The large bounce in SomaLogic's shares has lifted the company's P/S handsomely. Typically, we'd caution against reading too much into price-to-sales ratios when settling on investment decisions, though it can reveal plenty about what other market participants think about the company.
As we suspected, our examination of SomaLogic's analyst forecasts revealed that its superior revenue outlook is contributing to its high P/S. At this stage investors feel the potential for a deterioration in revenues is quite remote, justifying the elevated P/S ratio. It's hard to see the share price falling strongly in the near future under these circumstances.
